Hi all,

I'm entering the student photographer of the year award and I need to enter a single image that has been published or is of pulishable quality and need to write 300 words (max) about it. All these pictures are eligable and I theres a poll as I just cant decide.

What we're looking for: The winning photograph should be excellent, both artistically and technically, as well as demonstrating the photographer's understanding of their subject it should make the judges wish they had taken it themselves.
First prize: £650 and a week's work experience at the Guardian for the winning photographer.
Runner-up: £400
How to enter: Send us five prints of your best photograph with your name marked clearly on the back. Please attach a short supporting statement (300 words max) that provides a context or narrative for your image. Enclose five copies of the completed entry form.
Please note: Your work should either have been published in the student press OR you must be a full-time student, in which case the work can be unpublished, but of publishable quality.

Cheers guys

I'd have to agree. For a competition entry you really have to have something special about an image. It can't just be technically correct (and I'm afraid the shots you've posted aren't technically great) but it also has to have something which makes it stands out from all the other entries.

When's the deadline? If I were you I'd look to shoot something especially for the competiton.

no real time I'm submitting them via the uni paper who want them for friday and I've been too snowed under with exams to be shooting much in the last few weeks, unfortunately most of the awards are for print so timing is less of a big deal as its an article from the year :S

2nd portrait one might make it.. maybe with a crop.... first one you just want her to step into that luverly lighting to her left :)

i'm a little underwhelmed too frankly
#1 is nice but is cropped harshly on the bass and has little emotive impact for me on the player as he's completely in shadow
#2 could be good with some cropping, lightening and greyscale for me...but it's a bit lost on there
the rest, the meaning seems vague or the musicians are covered in mic stands (I HATE MIC STANDS, wish I could steal them from a stage before the musicians come on)

I like the rugby shots, but i wouldnt say there is anything too special happening in them to warrant the comp entry. you do have some nice images, but none of the ones posted make you go "WOW"

I know its trickier than I tthought getting something with wow for the a comps :S
I shoulda shot something on purpose before course stuff got so hectic

I'll repost S2 with a tighter crop in a mo

Only one that stands out as interesting is S2 for me, nice light. Nothing particularly grabs me I'm afraid though....

think it's unlikely that I get anything but next year I'll know to be earlier

here's S2 with an exposure tweak and a tight crop in another aspect ratio

*edit* forgot to paste the link

lmao, there's a set of them, really sweet girls that insisted on group pictures every 20 minutes all day, only one that had the journalism look to me though :S

(so far my choices of pic haven't been the best so maybe .... lol)
