Help needed with focusing problem on canon 5D markIII

OK, if you were using IR AF assist this is your problem.
There was an issue with the camera AF speed when using IR assist prior to the latest firmware. The latest is 1.2.1.

Ah, but he said he was only using flash in the second half, so this would discount the flash being the problem IMO.
Also its only going to slow things down if you use the AF assist beam. It wont stop the camera from focusing.

Correct and more importantly the flash was off the camera inside a soft box.

On your first FA menu, which case are you using. How many (or which focus points) have you got set up? Selectable af points menu item. Then what do you have set for af area select mode?
I've left mine on the standard settings having played with most of them and found they work well for me. So I'm running with case 1, all 61 points and spot af

I was out with the flash on Friday night as you may have seen by my post asking for some advice (which not a single person replied to, thanks for that...) and used the assist. It seems to work well. When the camera wasn't picking up the focus the AF assist was triggering and getting the lock for me.
So far I like this flash a lot, it's paying for itself in reduction of irritatingly missed shots alone
