Well its OBVIOUS now..... its a little green man coming out of his crater!
Personally I think Mike attempted to be very helpful. I guess he assumed that you had taken the shot, asked a series of pertinent questions relevent to the subject that you can't answer because it was taken by NASA, and then you get snooty when he gives a tongue in cheek response !
To me it looks like a man in a spacesuit doing a moon walk

Hi judge, welcome to TP! Don't worry about the uh, robust comments from some of our less well house-trained citizens.
I'd say it's a processing flaw. You'd likely see it on lots of images if it were anything on the camera.
But of course it could be a Martian...
Thats my Bruv then, he is always larking about :shake::shake:
Thank you for the welcome Jon
A processing flaw wouldnt happen on every image would it ?
Depends on what was causing it. If it were a sensor flaw, it would tend to show on most images and would be a tad tricky to fix in the circumstances. Is that shot from the NASA site? Looks a bit rough compared with the published stuff I've seen. Forgot to say above: Most uncharacteristic of flair, so I wouldn't think that is the problem.
Sorry - hadn't checked. Just had a look at the NASA site, and the first few shots show a similar mark so there may be a flaw on the sensor or something. Probably enough to get the UFO nutters excited, but that doesn't take much. Doesn't cover much in the frame, so probably nothing much to worry about.
Serious research. OK. Each to his own, I guess.
Clearly some kind of sensor defect. It's on the first 4 or so, but the actual shape of the defect changes, so it's clearly not actually there whatever it is. It's an optical or electronic defect. I know nothing of the camera it uses... is it a normal visible spectrum, or was this a IR sensitive camera? It COULD Be flare if there is something crystaline or silicate based reflecting enough sunlight. Light levels are very low on mars and any camera would need to be set to to an exposure level similar to twighlight on earth, so something suddenly very bright in the IR spectrum could conceivably flare.
My money is just some random sensor noise.
Could be. SETI was pretty serious back in the day.
but the UFO crowd will see what they want in that pic regardless of common sense or logic![]()
