My daughters riding stable have asked me to take some photos for them.Went yesterday to have a test run.Like the way the horse has come out with the motion in the photo.but not happy with the rider being blurry is there any way to stop this happening.

At a guess, I would up the shutter speed.

Can you tell us what the settings were or give us the exif data?

If it was me I'd try 1/400 min, this is presumng she is doing a dressage type speed. You may struggle with light indoors so might need to up the ISO.

The horse's face looks quite sharp, yet the rider looks quite soft. Hmm..a mystery, they should be in the same focal plane. Maybe the rider was moving her head?

I think it is just the movement of the rider. The only way to stop that is up the shutter speed and the ISO.

rider's going up and down, and the horse left - tracking the panning horse is easy enough, but if the rider moves up or down it will blur unless high shutter is used to freeze it - which as it's indoors could be tricky (dropping f number will help as will increasing ISO, but will increase noise aswell)

As people have said, the problem is that you have movement is different directions at a trot. Can't you get them to gallop  This might sound daft, but if you track the horse by panning and follow the up/down movement of the rider with a wave motion, you might get a better result. Worth a try I think.

The only alternative is to freeze eveything with a fast shutter speed, which in that situation probably means high ISO as well as lowest f/number.

Just thinking about my post above for a moment, about tracking with a wave motion, what you would effectively be doing is then tracking the rider's movement in priority to the horse. But if you adopted a more gentle wave, you could kind of split the difference ;)

It's kind of a fudge, but if this is the way to go, it should allow you to get away with a longer shutter speed, while still getting the sharpness you need in the rider and the horse's head, still blurring the feet and background, yet also allowing an f/number for the depth of field you need (not that much by the looks) and reasonable ISO.

I have feeling that I've seen this done before - some hazy recollection of when my daughter started riding a long time ago. Not sure. But it's got to be worth a few minutes trial and error, experimenting with different shutter speeds and movement until you get the best compromise.

I just think it's worth a punt. The option of just using a faster shutter speed will always be there.

also to add to the above, try to take the shot when she's at the lowest/highest point of bounce as there won't be much vertical movement

Wow, some nice technique advice here. Tracking in a wave motion sounds difficult to me , I think I will just up the ISO and freeze the whole lot (horse & rider) :D

If you're not too adverse and there's not a lot of photos you could always add a bit of motion in PS. Obviously nothing like the real thing but worth thinking about if that's really what you want.

Brilliant idea :) So obvious! Why didn't I think of that (please don't answer). Shouldn't be too hard either. Problem solved IMHO :D
