Use Easy Thumbnails (FREE!) an excellent piece of software.
You can resize your pics and at the same time reduce the filesize to make them extremely quick to upload and easier on the servers here.
I set the quality on mine to 85% which gives excellent quality and quite small filesizes.

Most image editing software will have this feature, even if its a bit hidden!
Whenever I upload things onto here, or elsewhere like facebook etc. I generally just take the processed image, open it in windows paint and use that to resize it / reduce file size

Crop and photo resize in photoshop an then set up an action....
