Hi everyone, i really need some help here, i went into jessops today to try out the nikon D5100 and the canon 600D. I took my SD card in and took a few photos with each camera, i have just tried to look at them on my PC and the nikon ones open fine they are jpegs, but the canon files won't open, they are CTG files. Is there any way i can open these, i really wanted to compare photos tonight.:'(

Thanks Alastair, ive just discovered that. There are no other picture files in the EOS folder or on the sd card from the canon, i'm gutted, the photo comparison was going to be my final way of deciding which camera to buy.

If you used the same card in both cameras, then it sounds like you used the Canon first and then the Nikon and you've lost the Canon shots.

They do use different file systems. You should have used seperate cards.

Panic over, thanks for your advice and quick response guys. The nikon created a folder called D5100 and there were ten files in there, 5 nef files and 5 jpgs, i assumed the nikon had saved 2 copies, one in nef and one in jpg. The jpegs were the canon shots. :amstupid: Now which took the best photos.

I wouldn't have thought that'd be a fair comparison, if I'm honest, since jpgs are compressed and nef files are (correct me if I'm wrong) uncompressed/raw.

That'd be like comparing which tv gives a better picture playing bluray in one, dvd in the other.

I have used ViewNX2 and done a straight conversion from nef to jpg, would that be a fairer comparison or will the conversion affect the nikon shots?

To be completely honest, I'm not sure, since I dont know what filtering/effects the canon has put on the photo while saving it. I'd imagine it'd be close enough, but I'm fully prepared to be proven wrong.

Ok, quick comparison with my eyes gives the Nikon the edge, not the ideal situation to take comparison shots and don't know how much difference it would make once the cameras are setup properly, both cameras were used in full auto setting.

Not really, a raw straight out of camera will have no processing applied where a jpg will have.

Comparing Jpg to jpg would be better, but as above it depends what processing settings were enabled on the camera.

open the card in explorer, see if your getting the wrong folder, there maybe a few

Thought that may be your problem Rod, pleased you got it sorted

Glad you got the card issue sorted.

Those 2 cameras are spec wise very close. Which one felt the most natural fit in your hands, that's the one I'd choose.

The image comparison isn't a really fair one using the in shop method, too many variables involved. Which lens was fitted, how the camera was setup (you'll hardly use Auto after a while if at all) as others have said depending on the filters used in camera for the JPEG output would make a difference to the final image.

Just my opinion, but I when I chose my first DSLR I too went in Jessops and handled a Sony, Canon and Nikon and basically picked the one I felt most comfortable with.

Paul.

Wow wow, slow down. You're buying a camera based on which one takes the best shots?

Honestly......everyone knows you buy the one that doesn't have Nikon written on it. :D

As PaulF says, you want the one that your feel most comfortable with....could you honestly take out a Nikon in public?

They both felt good in the hand and they both have features i like, i am really struggling with this decision, i have had to ask jessops to give me more time to decide.

Well i went back to jessops today and came out with a bag, a UV filter, a screen protector, a lens hood, AND, a CANON 600D. :woot:

Good Man!

It's worth taking the time deciding what you want to buy, as a camera is a lot of £££ and you want to be happy with what you bought, I spent 3 months deciding. Let us know how you get on :)

Thanks Rob,

Will be uploading some photos taken today, with not having much time to read and understand the manual before i went out, i ended up shooting in a couple of the basic modes and a little bit in aperture priority. Will post in the Architecture & Urban critique section.
