As the title says - I'm going to Okehampton, Devon, for a few days next week and will have some time to myself to get out and about with my camera.

Any suggestions for good locations would be fantastic - say within 20-30 mile radius.

It's ages since I've been down to Devon and I really want to make the most of the opportunity. :)

Thanks

Jean

A lot to do…
  • The moor will always look good, so that is obvious
  • Brent Tor is a favourite – small church on a hill, nice glider site nearby , amazing sunsets.
  • Bowermans nose – you may have to google that one, not easy to find!!!
  • Lydford Gorge – is spectacular, nice waterfall at the end, dark so need a good tripod
  • Becky Falls – same as above
  • Clapper Bridges – Postbridge, Fingle bridge
  • Hartland and the quay – amazing rock formations, good surf
  • Bude – big beaches, good surf, plenty of birds
  • Widemouth bay, just around the corner from Bude – massive beach, great sunsets
  • Clovelly – very steep, nice harbour – serious hard work!!!
  • Lundy Island – boat from either Bideford and Ilfracombe, not sure what you do, but a great day out!

Slightly further out but well worth the effort is the village of Minions which is on Bodmin Moor, this is one of my all time favourite locations – has massive granite outcrops (cheesewring), 2 x stone circles, Trevethy Quoit is close plus loads of old tin mines, lots of stunted trees and views to both the north and south Cornish coasts…
Enjoy...

A couple of snaps to give you an idea - happy to supply more details if needed

Natalie - many thanks. :) You've saved me a trip into Okehampton.

jfb - wow - that's a fantastic choice. I need to stay longer than a few days. Thanks also for the pictures (dininitely not 'snaps')

Is the Black Rock shot in the evening? Bowerman's Nose and Cheesewring look amazing, and I love the warm stone in the old mine and Brent Tor.

I've never been to Lundy Island so that sounds great, in fact I haven't been to any of the places you mention. Your help is much appreciated - thanks. :)

Yeah Okehampton's a dump, but the Moors are right there...Exmoor is north and Dartmoor is south...
You also have the Jurassic Coast - Budleigh, Exmouth and along to Lyme Regis in the South; and the North Devon Coast along into the Bristol Channel...

All good spots for landscape phots if you like that sort of thing...I don't, but I do like the countryside for walking and cycling in...

It doesn't...not quite...been a lot wetter whenever I was there - watch out for yomping Booties as well - Red Range Flags will alert you to any exercises going on...

Widemouth is North coast, so definitely sunset territory, the whole area is good. In defence Oke is OK – there are a few nice bits, they have a castle which can look good when its not raining, some nice railway viaducts, reservoirs, etc, so not all bad!!! It is classed as being in the rain shadow of the moor – bad weather comes in from the west, hits the moor, gets driven higher, turns to rain which means poor old Oke gets a soaking…

If you venture along the north coast either east or west you will find loads to do – west you get to Bude, Tintagle, Port Isaac, Rock continue as far as Padstow. Going east it is as diverse, Bideford, Instow, Barnstaple, Croyde, Woolacombe, Ilfracombe and Combe Martin all worth a look…

Ooo - lovely. Exmoor and Dartmoor sound great and I didn't realise the Jurassic coast stretched that far west.

Go up Yes Tor (about 2-3 miles from Okehampton according to the sleeve notes) and let us know if it looks like this:

Thanks for the warning, Arkady. :D

It sound as though I should put my wellies in my camera bag! I could probably spend a whole day at just one of those locations by the sound of it. Many thanks.

+1 for North cornwall Bude area, oke is 30 mins in a car from bude and has some very nice beaches

Many thanks, david.

lot of nice places along the north coast from Bideford going west one place worth a look is Bucks Mills and just a 3miles along is Clovelly
The Grand weston Canel from TIverton is also about 20miles frome you
Much depends on what your into

The North Coast is getting a lot of plugs! What I want to do is try a few new things out. I do a lot of landscapes but it's very flat where I live so the Moors sound good, and I quite fancy some waves crashing on rocky headlands, backed by dramatic skies, ... and then I also want to get some architecture, in fact there's tons of stuff I want to try, but I don't want to end up flitting from one thing to another and coming back with no keepers!

I really appreciate all this info - I need to stay for a month, at least.

One other place that I don't think has been suggested is Tavistock, its approx 15miles from Oakhampton and has some lovely old buildings, access to the moores and some nice parks / rivers.

Oooo, thank you Gavinb. I've never seriously tried togging buildings, but I'd love to have a go, although I know it's far from easy. Good suggestion.
