I looked at some of my friends pictures today They were taken with a tamron 17-50 they are so much better than my 18-55. Would I benifit getting one and would it auto focus on my nikon d3100
Thanks Nikki

Not sure about the auto focus part but the tamron 17-50 should be a vast improvement over any kit lens

is your friend's lens a nikon fit as well? if so, ask to have a try on your camera and see what you think of the difference... could be just different settings they were using which are making the images better.

what do you mean by 'so much better than my 18-55'? Sharper? Deeper colours? Be interesting to know

Better in what way?

TBH there are so many variables (especially the JPEG processing pre-sets) that the lens is quite likely to be the least of them in most situations.

I'm new to dslr but I found when I first took photos I hade a similar problem and turned out to be just not focusing on the correct place on the subject I was using.I know it sounds a really stupid thing to suggest but it's something to think about

The Nikon 18-55 kit lens is considered (among Nikon users) to be well above par - especially the VR version - so if you're getting pictures that are not crisply sharp I would look to your technique first before shelling out good money on another lens.

I can't comment on the Tamron 17-50 as I've never used one but I have their 28-75 f/2.8 and that is beautifully sharp. I'd still sell it and get the Nikon one though if I had the funds :)

Maybe is you post an example of a photo you're not happy with we can see if there are any glaring reasons that you might not have spotted :)

What kind of light were they taken in? That has more effect on perceived sharpness and impact than just about anything else. Seriously, I doubt it's the lens doing anything significant.

I think you are probably just needing a little direction as to whats not quite right with your shots. buying better equipment may give better results but I suspect its not the main reason things are not quite right.

I've seen some shots taken with teh camera I bought and they mine look terrible but then the last owner knew what they were doing.
