hi guys
ive been asked to take some pictures at a trophy presentation.
looking for some advice on things, should i be getting a separate flash? and whats the best way to use the flash? ive never done this before, was going to buy a flash tomorrow, and have a practice.
ill be using a a200 and the kit lens most likely, ive noticed the jessops flash has a built in diffuser, any good? or should i get a sony flash unit?
any help appreciated!!

Make sure the jessops flash id compatible. Sony cameras have a different hotshoe to the other brands. Personally I would stick to a Sony branded flashgun.

Have a practise. Stick the camera on manual and select your desired shutter speed, would suggest between 1/125 and 1/200 and then trial and error with the aperture until the exposure is as you want it. Other will have their ways, but that one works for me.

Good luck.

the jessops flash is listed as a sony fitting, but ill check. would the built in diffuser be of use?
for the flash, do u point it straight at the subject, or try bounce it/fire it upwards?
should the kit lens be ok?
thanks for the help

Don't know what the diffuser is like on the jessops one. I use a sto-fen on mine and keep it at 45 degrees for the most part.

60th of a second (most cameras sync at this) then select an aperture (get a flash with TTL metering is so much easier) bounce the flash if you can - try not to shoot head on - plus have fun!

Why such a slow shutter speed?

cheers
time to go for a look tommorow.
should the kit lens be ok? im not sure what the lighting is going to be like?

One thing to watch when shooting stuff like this is that the flash can easily be fooled into under exposing because of strong highlights in the silverware. Either turn off TTL/Auto and go fully manual or chimp every shot as you never know quite when a stray highlight will strike :(

cheers, off to jessops for a look 2moro.......
ill have a practice, and see how things go..... can only be good or bad, and bad can be improved:p
