Hmmm.......just trying to figure out what setting the 2 or 10 second self timer has to do with taking long exposures without the use of a remote release................. or is it just me?
 Just means you don't have to wait as long for it to take the picture.
The point I was trying to make was what has the self timer got to do with long exposures? The self timer simply delays the operation of the shutter and is absolutely nothing to do with the exposure time, which is what the original poster asked about.I think you might be missing my pointThe point I was trying to make was what has the self timer got to do with long exposures? You set the timer so you're not touching the camera when you start the exposure. Thus reducing camera shake. The OP was asking how to set the timer, I imagine for this reason.
