Yes
My home computer is in serious need of a total upgrade but I have no Idea where to start processor? memory?

Its running some AMD Athlon 64 3200+
994mhz, 448mb Ram
Windows XP
and 180GB

I'll only really use this for internet and running Photoshop ,but at the moment its just so slow

Where to start?

It may be worthwhile selling yours on and getting hold of a s/h base unit. This wouldn't cost that much at all...

Or a new motherboard, processor and RAM, keep your old OS etc.

but going that route you would also need to look at a new PSU (most likely a newer connector) and then the HDD will most likely be PATA which alot of the newer motherboards dont have many ports for so would probably end up sharing a cable with the CD/DVD drive that would slow the HDD down (also changing so many parts would class as a new comp so legally should buy a new copy of windows).

The easiest way would be to get a new system (either new or second hand) as with a system so old (might only be about 5 years but in pc's that a long time) it is hard to only upgrade a few components.

If you dont want to spend alot might be worth adding to the memory to get it around 2Gb as that will help alot with the speed.

Upgrade your processor to at least a dual core. If you do this you'll need a new motherboard and new RAM.

Yeah, that processor came out in like 2003. It's kind of old and slow by today's standards. I'm surprised Windows even loads with only 448MB RAM given the amount of service packs and updates XP has had since then.

Personally I'd just look at replacing your PC.

I was hoping people would say just buy a new computer.
Right I'm off to the sales to find one

rofl, have fun :)
