Hi i wonder if you can help me, i had 24 prints printed for free and some them i cropped and they have come out different sizes to the ones that have not, is there anyway to crop and not affect the size of the print or is this not possible. I hope you understand what i mean and can help me.

Many thanks Dex

sounds like you have cropped them at the wrong aspect ratio.

What size are the prints?

If they are 6"x4" then your crop should be 3x2 ratio

If the are 8"x6" then your crop ahoud be 4x3 ratio

etc etc

Many thanks for the answer, they were 6x4 prints, ah well cant complain i got them for free so will now know for next time to change the ratio. ah i see so i cant just crop as much as i want then then have it printed at 6x4 or can i?

Thats right, the crop needs to be the same aspect ratio as the print, so in this case 6x4 (ie 1:1.5)

Thank you for replying, i understand it now, is there any way in photoshop cs5 that you can set it to a ratio so when i crop it always crops to that size because i am bound to forget

There is a free program called jpegcrops that will quickly and easily trim your pictures to the aspect ratio you set. you can move the crop about to choose the best positioning.

It saves a new cropped version to say a subfolder and leaves the original untouched. it also does it losslessly so the picture quality is not changed, just the edges trimmed off where necessary.

I'll have to have a look at jpegcrops - sounds good

If you really want to do it in Photoshop though, you should be able to. I'm not sure about CS5, but in CS4 when you select the crop tool a little box appears on the menu bar where you can enter the dimensions that you want. In this case type "6 in" and "4 in" respectively.

I'd imagine that CS5 is similar

All Photoshop programmes, even the older ones, can be set to crop to whatever size you need. The aspect ratio will be maintained whatever size crop you do.

Maintainting the aspect ratio of the original will keep the shape but not the size. If you want to keep the size, you must save the crop as the same size as the original, or alter the DPI to compensate for the reduced picture size.

Hi Dex

When you select the crop tool, a button with ‘Front Image’ will appear on the top bar. Click this button and the aspect ratio of your new crop will match that of the original.

You can have different ratio sized photos printed on a set paper size but you need to add the extra blank space around the edges to fill the paper.
Crop image as you want.
Create new (blank) background layer.
Image - Canvas size. Increase the size to fit your desired ratio.
Set what colour you want the background.
Flatten and save for printing.
HTH :)
