Help where can I get a copy of XP cheap

My sons laptop hard drive has died, new hard drive is only about £40 but the laptop only had preloaded OS no instillation disks. How ever as a student he can get windows 7 upgrade from xp at student discount saving about £100 So anybody know where to pick up a cheap xp os disk
 
Often the xp serial is on the bottom of the case so you might be able to use that with the win7 discs. COMMENT REMOVED

Question to Paul,

Does the laptop still have it's OS sticker in place?

If so you just need the OS disc and this can quite legally be downloaded from Microsoft themselves! Let me know and I'll dig out the address

You may have saved the day, the laptop came with vista preloaded but there is a windows sticker on it with all the numbers on it.
If I understand you correctly I can down load the os to my computer burn to a disk load onto the laptop and use the numbers on the laptop when installing all legally.
In which case will you dig out the web address and I owe you a big thank you
 
I can post you a corporate copy of XP pro if you wish, it is an old one and will require you to download service pack 2 and 3, but 100% genuine

This wouldn't help! The volume licence versions are not compatible with home versions.
 
Thank you all for your help, I think Darren has the best answer. I may be able to do the same with all the other software, I will dig through the paper work to see if there are licence keys for the rest.
Darren if you could let me have the address it would be a big help I have spent a long time going round the window web site and have not found that bit.
 
Right, checked last night and they have just removed XP from the downloads because it is now officially no longer supported! Over 100 variants of Vista and Windows 7 but XP has just gone.

You will need an XP HOME install disc or check arad85's post (I've not looked at that)

You missed the bit where OP said it was a Vista pre-install.
 
You might find that a COA license for the laptop will not be accepted if you use media that is not coded for that license (Certificate Of Authenticity HAS to be stuck to chassis under microsoft licensing rules [if the OEM is using the COA scheme], this might be the serial number you find). COAs are a 'cheaper' license available to some OEMs. The OEM is responsible for ensuring that you can get the install media. This used to mean they included a coded disk with the original machine. This had the advantage that it included a slipstreamed copy of enough drivers to get all of the hardware working (thousands of updates available for download probably though). With the internet becomming more prevalent, and in an attempt to cut costs, a lot of the OEMs now provide these disks from their websites. If it is a dell or hp, put the service tag/serial into the support site, and it should take you to a page to download the disk fron (read the page carefully, they like to hide them for some strange reason)
 
The download is via digital river on behalf of ms. There are lots of different versions but I've not found a licence sticker yet that can't be reinstalled from there.
