Help with black and white please

Ive got a picture that i want black and white .

I dont just want to click the button on gimp and change it , i want to get the best out of it , keep the detail , and have a good contrast between the darks and lights , not just all grey .

Here is the picture -

any help appreciated . I really must get into this editing thing , so if you have any recomendations for software that`ll be great .

PS once again i have the RAW file if anyone wants it .
 
I'm not too great at pp myself yet but as for recommendations I'd recommend Lightroom any day, for a beginner like me I found it pretty simple to get some very pleasing results. Much simpler than gimp or Photoshop I've found.

All I did was to open it in CS5 and quickly convert it with Silver Efex Pro 2 using one of the presets (in other words - I cheated)
But - this could easily be done by converting to mono and then using the sliders to adjust the contrast between the different colours and then maybe a quick curves adjustment.
