Hi guys,
I want to put my new camera through its paces.

I want to setup a series of tests for ISO performance but need some help. When it comes to manual control I'm still out of my depth...

I want to shoot the same scene for :

100
200
400
800
1600
3200
6400

The problem is I don't know how to correctly expose each shot. I'm assuming I would have to change the aperture for each to avoid over exposing each subsequent image?

I don't have any lighting kit so it's under normal two dull 100Watt lights in my livingroom.

The other problem is depth of field. I want all items in each image to be in focus but changing the apeture changes this.

Any tips would be appreciated.

By changing aperture you're changing DOF, (which might affect your results) what i'd do is put the camera on a tripod or flat surface and change the shutter speed. I'm sure there is a way to work out a consistent way of doing it, but i'm not sure what that is :/

If you want the same things to be in focus, keep the aperture constant and just change the shutterspeed.

Make sure the cameras's on a tripod, set it on AV mode use f8/f11 to keep everything in focus and use the self timer/remote shutter to ensure the shots are sharp.

Edit: Arghh im too slow tonight!

I don't think you're going to have enough light to do a decent test there. Shutter speeds will probably get too long and you'll run into some long exposure noise that will ruin any ISO comparison.

Just changing shutter speed is the way to do it, as suggested, but you'll need to get the light level up, and turn off all noise reduction.

You'll struggle at the lower ISOs under bad light and a high f number. It depends what you're shooting too.

As a rule of thumb you should be able to double your shutter speed as you move up the ISOs. So for 200 if you're shooting at 1/20th you should shoot at 1/40th for 400 ISO.

i think you will need to compromise on the experiment
for each iso change...change the speed and keep the aperture steady
if you get to a point where you run out of speed...not enough...add some lighting an do the test again
too much...remove lighting and do the test again

if you dont want to change aperture...then you cant test relative speed aperture relationships in the various iso's

whew!
