Hi everyone, we have just joined a small local camera club and want to enter the competition this month. We don't have a printer so i would like to use DSCL to get some A4 prints.

I have researched various threads already but they don't seem to cover what i need to understand so i would like to ask for your help please.

I have Photoshop 7 and have managed to download their profiles and can see i have SRGB selected but i don't know how to do the following - "JPEG files at 300 dpi and sized to the correct output size required."

If there is anything else i need to understand please tell me; absolute beginner with both Photoshop and printing so all guidance is gratefully received.

Thanks very much,

Tracey

Hi Tom,

Thanks for the link. I have downloaded their profile and can find it in Photoshop; i am just confused as to how to do the 300 DPI bit and to get it to the correct size they mention.

Thanks again,

Tracey

Hi Graham,

Thanks, i have tried that now.

Changed it to A4 and it has defaulted to 300 pixels per inch, which i can't change. Is this actually what DPI means though?

Sorry for being so wooden...

Tracey

I assume you have put the profiles in the correct folder on your computer. I use CS3 but I'm guessing it will be similar in PS7.
1. It is important that you crop/resize your images to the correct dimension and orientation (portrait or landscape).
2. on top menu bar go to Image/Resize/image size a dialogue box opens and you will see the image dimension shown in pixels and document size in inches (if these are not visible just click the box to the right of the dimension to change units)
3. Change the resolution box to 300.

another way to resize the image is to use the crop tool again go to image/Crop and then you can either enter the dimensions directly or pick from preset ones in the aspect ratio box. You can also set the resolution here as well.

To change the colour profile go to Image/Convert colour profile a box opens and if you have the colour profiles in the correct folder you should be able to pick the one for DSCL.

Hope this helps
Mick

Thanks Mick, that is very helpful.

So, just to clarify please, the 300 DPI mentioned on the DSCL website is actually Pixels per Inch in Photoshop?

Cheers,

Tracey

Thanks Graham. I had saved the images to send as 300 Pixels per Inch so i had better revisit them to see if i can find DPI!

Best wishes,

Tracey

Although DPI and PPI are different as stated above, for photographic printing purposes they are the same, and you have saved your images correctly:)

Hi Tim,

Thanks very much for confirming that; i was starting to panic as i couldn't find DPI on Photoshop. Just had a look at the images and the properties do indeed say 300 DPI - phew!

Thanks again to you and everyone else who has helped me with this thread; it is very much appreciated!
