Its my daughters 18th birthday party tomorrow and as a suprise i have hired her a pink limo to take her and friends to the party. I would like to do a group shot of her and her friends outside the limo as a keepsake for her while still daylight at around 6pm .
I was wondering about focusing as i dont really do these type of shots , normally i have my focus points set up on the wheel and just choose a spot i want . Whats the best way of getting most people in focus ? and what do you think would be the best lens to use out of these ?

I have a canon 40d with a Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 or Nifty Fifty 1.8 i also have a 580exII

Well if you're standing straight on they'll all be in focus.

Well I apologise for trying to be helpful with the little bit of information I knew, and offered. Sorry for not writing an essay. I don't know why I bother half the time anyway!

Well i apologise for asking , dont know why i bothered asking the question in the first place

Well some thoughts Mike,
for depth of field (all in focus) I would use f8. For Composition your 17-50 will give flexibility.
Set Focus point to centre and focus on your daughters eyes. If overcast, you may want to use some fill-in flash (search boards for how to do this). You may need a tripod if the light levels are low.

I would use the Tamron as you may have to stand back for a group shot with the Fifty

If it were me, id set a high aperture so as much as possible is in focus

Shooting at f8 will keep most everyone in some kind of focus as MBSCAD said
if you decide to shoot head on then everyone will be focused even at F4.

Thankyou

I would aim for around the 30mm mark on the zoom and f8 as it will give you more DOF and a nicer look 17mm will distort the image .
If there in a line as said all will be in focus but if you want to take a shot one in front of the other focus about a third in i.e like looking down a que of people again f8 should cover focus from back to front.
Rob.
