Hi all

I currently have a Nikon D90 and in-time (money depending !) hoping to upgrade to the D7200.

My current lenses are:

Nikon 18-105mm
Nikon 70-300mm
Tokina 12-24mm

I mainly shoot landscapes with either the Tokina or the Nikon. Also started shooting steam trains, light trails, buildings etc where we live.

90% of my shots are on the wide side of the Nikon (18mm)

What would be a good choice of a new lens but something not too expensive? It will be used for landscapes / trains.

I was thinking the Nikon 16-85mm. Is there much quality difference between that and the 18-105?

I was also thinking 35mm 1.8g.

I was going to keep the 18-105 for ad-hoc portrait shots in case we have children.

Would you buy neither and save for the D7200

Any suggestions always appreciated.

I had the Nikon 35mm f1.8 DX when I had a D7000.
I think it's one of the best lenses for the money you can get.
As far as waiting and saving for the D7200, I say get lenses first, they are more important than the body.
Good luck in your decision.

I'm actively considering a D90
in reading reviews - the 18-105 is reported to be --
Copywrite Ken Rockwell
''..the 18-105mm is Nikon's fuzziest lens in the corners at 18mm. Even the $100 18-55mm is better..''

and he highly rates the 16-85mm if you want to check
I have the 18-55 VR and - as a kit lens - i does the job well [ for me ATM ]

as you, the 35mm is on my 'list'.....:)

Hi

I have a d90 too but don't really do landscapes so not sure if this helps...

The lens I mainly use on my D90 is the Tamron 17-50 f 2.8 non vc.

I had a 35mm and 50mm but after buying the Tamron were not getting any use so ended selling both.

Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 HSM OS was brilliant for me when I had a D7000.

Thanks. Is the 17-70 advertised as a macro lens? Stupid question but will it still be ok for landscapes?

It's only advertised as a macro as it focuses close. I have one and have used it for everything this last 3 years. It is on a D7000. And I am selling it soon as I am moving to full frame.

I have the 16-85 Nikon paired with my D7200, its a great walkabout lens, snappy focus and the build quality is pretty decent. I was going to go with a Siggy 17-50 but decided to stick with Nikon, got mine from MPB for a sniff over £200 and it was a mint copy, no marks or blemishes at all. With the 70-300 the pair give me a great range from 16-300 in only two lenses.
