help with wifi??

Ok so here is my problem. Iv just got a new laptop, a macbook, and i wont to connect to the internet at my dads house which at the moment is a wired network as we've only ever had one desktop running on it. Would i be right thinking that if i plugged in my modem (i think thats the right name for it, its a virgin ambit anyway) to this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Belkin-Wirele...tworking_SM&hash=item3f04f7b9a5#ht_1817wt_901 would it work???

my other worry though is when i plugged my laptop into the modem i couldn't seem to connect, does this mean it wont be able to work??

How is the existing computer wired into the network and who is the ISP (Virgin cable or other ADSL)? The link points to a cable router / access point, you may just need an WiFi Access Point.

More details on the existing setup needed.
 
If you have a wireless router like the ebay link then unplug the PC and connect that instead.
Then you need a new network cable to connect the PC to the wireless router.
Once that is done the PC should be working as before.
Read the setup instructions for the router and log in to the router set up web page using the PC and sort out the wireless security.
Let the laptop find your new wireless network and log in with the security key you set earlier.

Virgin may want to do a registration process if the cable modem is tied to the mac address on the old PC. Either do he registration process or clone the mac address from the PC to the router (see router instructions)

The eBay item is reasonably priced and will give you WiFi access. :thumbs:

wow that sounds complex, am i right in thinking that all i need to do then is buy the ebay router, plug my modem into it, but another ethernet cable that goes from the new router into the computer and then also connect wirelessly ???

ok ill look at getting that then :)
 
If you buy the Belkin one then here's what you do

You unplug the cable from your ambit to your pc at the pc end.

You plug that cable into the WAN port on the Belkin

You then plug the network cable you should get with the Belkin back inot your PC.

Reboot your Cable modem, then switch on the router, finaly reboot your PC.

You should now be able to get back on the internet.

You used to have to clone the mac address from the cable modem into the Belkin but it's not always neccesary so forget that for now.

On the Belkin it may tell you the SSID or Wifi network name it uses. You would left click on the Wifi icon on the bottom right of your task bar on the laptop. It will allow you to open a list of wifi connections. Included will be the name of your new Belkin box.

Click on that one and if it needs a passkey it will ask for it, that should be written on the Belkins label. If it doesn't ask for a key then it's got no security on the Belkin.

If you get this far and it has no security then get back to us.

I use a slightly more expensive Edimax router on my system, I only use that make on wireless systems I install as it's reliable and easy to set up.

Just to check i understand, ill have the fiberoptic cable going into the ambit, a ethernet cable into the beklin from the ambit. another ethernet back into the computer form the beklin, then i can just connect from the wifi of the beklin??

ok i got it know, thanks for your help, Im not bad with computers, i just never really understood networks and wifi, i don't this it helps iv always had wireless routers that are also modems so iv never had to think about having to have combine both, thanks for all your help, much appreciated :)

The router has a built in configuration web site where you enter the security stuff etc. to get to it you have to type the address into the address box at the top of your browser (where you now see http:// talkp... etc showing the web address of this forum page). Check the router manual. it will be something like 192.168.0.1 that you have to type in.

Assuming of course the computer is connected to the router :)
 
yea it was very confusing, i wonder if networking is something in computing i will never understand, after doing it i entered in the encrypted password it made me but it still didn't work, did the old trick of turning them on and off again and im all set :)
