Help with zoom choice

Im looking at purchasing a good quality 70-200mm zoom in the very near future and would be interested to hear peoples views.

Now it will probably be a used lens and i'm not in the position financially to be purchasing L series glass. Also I really could do with a constant aperture of f2.8 so have narrowed it down to the following lenses:

Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM

Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD IF Macro SP AF

I've read good reviews on both but the Tamron seems to be slightly edging it at the moment. Not to fused about the difference in AF speeds etc as sharpness, reliability is the main concern.

So what are peoples views and expriences of these two lenses and are the any other lenses im missing that are in the same area and price.

What are you going to be shooting?

Tamron IMO is sharper, but Sigma is better build and faster AF system.
 
What's your budget? Could you live with an f4? Canon's range of 70-200 are hard to beat..

You can pick these up for £400 ish (non is) :-)
 
I've got the sigma 70-200mm f2.8 mkii ( well the repair shop has)

I really like it perfectly usable wide open tho around min focusing distance its best to stop it down a bit, past f5.6.
AF speed in my option is very fast an pretty quiet.
Build quality is pretty decent the finish takes a few scuff marks here and there but that's to be expected, lots of people say the sigma lens finish is marmite but I like both so .... :D

despite mine being currently in two pieces, my fault and would have happened to any lens, it's a pretty solid lens well as solid as a lens could be I don't recommend dropping on titled flooring them unless you like visiting the repair shop though :p
