Easiest way is to upload to a laptop first then save to dropbox / flickr / or email it to yourself and download using the ipad. You could (probably) get hold of a cable & adapter to plug the SD directly into the ipad but I have no idea if they have been designed yet - anyone else know if they have been made yet??

You could try the SD card adapter from Apple.

The built in Photos App will import the pictures direct from the SD card. I have the equivalent for my iPad 3 and it works like a charm.

You can also buy a cheaper iPad camera connection kit from the auction site of hell.
once connected you open the photo app and you will see an option to import.
I would also suggest getting a copy of the snapseed app, which is a very nice little image editor and I believe it is free.
