I'm trying to shoot some video with my iPhone. Short clips are sometimes OK, but anything longer, although it plays perfectly well on my phone, won't play when transferred to my PC and isn't recognised by Premier Pro. These clips are, apparently, in HEVC format and I get an error message telling me that I need to buy a codec, or convert the files to a different format.

Does anyone know the solution please?

Thanks. It was set to "high efficiency"

Is there not an HEVC codec in the Windows Store? (I feel sure I installed one)

Play High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) videos in any video app on your Windows 10 device. These extensions are designed to take advantage of hardware capabilities on some newer devices— including those with an Intel 7th Generation Core processor and newer GPU to support 4K and Ultra HD content. For devices that don’t have hardware support for HEVC videos, software support is provided, but the playback experience might vary based on the video resolution and PC performance. These extensions also let you encode HEVC content on devices that don’t have a hardware-based video encoder. https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9N4WGH0Z6VHQ

I tried the Windows store, but it came up with an error message "This app will not work on your device"

You can still get the windows codec for free if you search no need to pay for it in the store.
You need it for Davinci for instance.

I think I got the codec pack from here.

Many thanks, problem now solved:)

I think the free VLC media player supports HEVC files.
This! its a complete free and safe software that will play pretty much any audio or video codec you throw at it

That's all well and good for playing back in VLC player. Doesn't help the Premier Pro issue though.
Installing the windows codec does.

Actually it's solved that problem too!

In theory, problems like this should be easy to fix by looking online, but in reality the search results are very likely to suggest downloads that may be risky, and asking the experts on this forum is the safe and quick solution, we all have different areas of specialised knowledge:)
