Yes
I have had the hide up for a week now and the buzzard seems o.k. with it but when you get in the hide - NO BUZZARD, Dressed in camo gear also so there is no chance he can see me, been feeding it every day with fresh meat and fish.

What else can I do:shrug: anyone any suggestions,? :help:

I know they are very shy birdsmay just have to plump for a "pass by" shot and hope I am lucky.

Take someone with you.
Two people go into the hide then one comes out and goes away.
Birds cannot count too well.

I saw a docco on the BBC where the photographer waited months for the right shot.
Patience...

Could also try using a coke bottle or something the same size as your lens sticking out of the hide to mimic your lens when you're not there.
Sometimes it's the lens that's not normally there pointing out of the hide that freaks the bird into not landing.

Bleedin things :(

Driving home today, perched on a branch 20feet from a layby was a thumping mahooosive buz. Stopped the car, bird didn't move. Got out of car, still bird remained motionless. Went to boot and opened it, not even a twitch. Removed camera from boot, still nothing. Turned camera on and dialled in full auto, bird still not moved. Took 2 paces forward, then another. Stopped. By now it's not even looking in my direction and as I slowly raised my camera to my face .... it took off at full tilt. :(

I then proceeded to stand in the lay-by with cars speeding past harranging and shouting obscenities the bird at the top of my lungs.

I've been there before :D

I have been trying to get a Good picture of a buzzard that I keep spotting around work its be hard every time I spot it perched it fly s off before I can get close enough for a half decent picture or the light as been poor here is my best so far but all have been at a distance and then cropped.

I saw a nature program a few years ago where the tog went up to seven or more people going in to the hide before the target bird lost count and showed itself.

How early are you getting there......most of the time it will require you getting to the hide and set up before sunrise.

Briony,

I'll come down one morning and help try to confuse him if you like.

Seems to be here all the day likes feeding in the field on worms, have taken hide down now and going for the tree approach (just need to find a tree wide enough to hide me:lol::lol:)

Been feeding it also, likes pheasants, eggs, fish and chicken !!!! Eats better than me.

I will try the sunrise approach though not a problem getting up

Briony
driving through Cuxham the other evening saw a lovely Buzzard on a pole and even though i didn't have a camera with me I stopped and was able to watch it from about 20 feet for 2 or 3 minutes. I am sure if I had a camera it would have taken off as soon as I stopped a-la RobC.

Your right that must have been Monday I went to chalgrove to the flower shop and there he was stopped the car, watched for a while got out after about 10 mins still there got out binoculars first - yes you guessed it the little ******:lol::lol::lol: was so close as well, Aghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh:bang::bang::bang::bang:

Did this also 2 people and 2 dogs into the hide, then 1 person 2 dogs out of the hide -

4 hours later still one person in the hide freezing cold and totally fed up not one shot fired :lol::lol::lol::lol: and wondering why they like photography so much :shrug:

Yep I have at least 2 nesting pairs around (when you can see them) but you can always here them, had about 8 out here yesterday riding the thermals, but very high up.

Ah I have all this to look forward to.

Briony do you pack the hide away after each day? If you can and feel safe in doing so try and leave the hide for several days or more.......birds will know what is normally there and what is not, if the hide is present long enough they will get used to it being a part of the surroundings (the land really needs to be private so you don't get some yob vandalising or dragging it off).

Also (and this is the icky bit) try and use road kill a) it looks more natural in your shot (with fluff etc), b) its probably more healthy (for the bird that is ).

Hide has been up all the time as we own the land (alot of it in fact ) and I shoot rabbits etc for it to eat also, like the bloody ritz for it here  You see we have a farm of about 1000 acres :shrug:

Give up trying accept that you'll never get a decent picture! Then your bound to get one

I think you might be feeding to often, try stopping for a few days and then put some out and get in the hide.

If you will stand and have your photo taken then I will throw you a bit of cake :lol::lol::lol::clap:

There are 3 pairs os I doubt if feeding it is the problem. I don't feed it every day just when I have shot a rabbit or have something that need eating up.

The kites have chicken wings bought for them round here

I reckon then that your best course of action is indeed......................

..........Reverse psychology, you go out in that field in plain sight shout up at the buzzards (a bit of finger pointing helps in this highly technical method) telling them 'I don't want to take your photo, i'll go photograph the rabbits instead..........oh and you smell (always rankle them),' then run to your hide as they'll be down in seconds......after all how can you say rabbits are more photogenic than buzzards, that's just preposterous and every buzzard knows it. They'll be showing you how photogenic they are in seconds.

Good luck :p

the red kites were low over chalgrove last week as i drive through
if some one had been driving me i would have got some good shots from the sun roof.

Lost count how many times that's happened now, we should get some T shirts printed " I nearly shot a Buzzard" :)

I'm sure they do it on purpose

:agree: you aint joking :)

How do we know birds cant count

ive heard this before but often wondered who came to the conclusion  i mean if the bird has 4 chicks and comes back and only 3 are left surely it knows one is missing therefore can count or at least flap and think whats happened  somethings not right :runaway:

has it been scientificaly proven?

Don`t overfeed them Briony.BOPS are lazy buggers and only do anything if they really have to.........:)

Where have you positioned your hide and where are you feeding them?
