Hmm, really not sure what is going on here...

Basically, these have all been taken with an infrared filter, it was my first outing with it today and the first few images came out quite nicely...however these almost speckle like things started to appear; all in the same place! I had a thorough look at the filter its self and its as clean as a nun! :gag:

It can't be the sun causing problems because they (speckles) are all in the same place in different locations, its not the camera because when I take a normal image with no filter no speckles appear! So what the bloody hell is it!?

If anybodies got the faintest idea I would love to hear from you! :help:
Plus I'm not looking for any C&C on composition etc as these photos were literally taken for the example. :)

Cheers...

Really does look like water on the lens/filter to me!

Water (or dried water droplet residue) on your front element of filter.....I think that's what it looks like at small apertures!

:agree:

I had the same last weekend.
I was shooting on a windy beach, the drops of water and sand produced a very similar effect.

Thanks for the feedback, but I don't think it is... It didn't rain at all when I was out, and it was my first outing with it.

Would anything show on the filter if it was water/residue?

I think it would at a small aperture.....it wouldn't if you were shooting wide though. It looks like a really fine spray/mist and the spots are the same on each image so it's nothing to do with flare....other than that I'm stumped!!

Take filter back and get a refund if you can. Saves you time trying to debug what it is, take the photos into the store also and show them.

Like damien... I'm completely stumped! I'll have a reshoot tomorrow and if it continues I might just well take it back, because like I said, there is no evidence of any residue or water spattering or even finger prints on it!

:bang:

EDIT: HOWEVER... does anyone think it may be due to a slight visible light leakage?

I saw this thread earlier and with out even reading your post I assumed it was water.

Is it a slot-in filter? If so, because it's so dark, light gets behind it and reflects off the diaphragm, which is the hexagon shape you're seeing.

Dark filters need to be sealed against light leaks. Screw-in filters is the simplest way, or you can seal a square jobbie with BluTack.

YES! And from this I've worked it out... I knew of light leakage before I went out and when I was out completely forgot about it! Looking through the exif data last night in detail I realised that all the shots with speckles were taken at 18mm!! Therefore the wider angle of vision from the lens meant it would have easily taken in unwanted 'visible' light thus causing the speckles!

Thank you very much Richard for prodding me in the direction, and thanks to everyone else with all your suggestions! Jobs a good'n!

 If you still get strange things going on, you might try putting tape around the edges too, to stop light getting in there and bouncing around within the filter itself.

And don't forget to cover the viewfinder as light gets in there too, and creeps around tiny gaps in the piggy-back mirror.

The other thing you might notice is optical vignetting if you use a very wide lens, darkening the corners. A wide lens looks through the sides of the filter at an angle, effectively making it thicker and therefore darker.

A book on lens flare by Canon shows the sometimes pentagon other times hexagon speckles on the shot with wide angle lens. They are the aperture blades.

 Thanks again Richard!

And that'll explain the shape! Cheers Andrew! :)
