Suggestions for me and the wifes next holiday in march time needed. Last year we went to Krakow and it was ace and only cost a total of about 600 including trips food and spending money. We are looking for something similarly priced with lots to take pictures of. Prefer colder places to warm really. Any ideas?

:agree: plus you'll feel safe as well - Police are visible and around the centre - just be careful of "little venice" thou, as it is bloody little :p ie about two lengths of a gondala & blink and you've missed it

Amazing place espically as they were totally flooded a few years ago...

Cheers for the suggestion. We actually thought about Prague last year so maybe well think of that. One thing I would like to see is the northern lights but everywhere seems a fair bit more money.

I would like to as well - if it was 1005 guaranteed that I will see them

I'd recommend Berlin, it's easily one of the most affordable capital cities in Europe.

March is a little too late in the year to have a good chance of seeing the northern lights. You have a very good chance around Dec-Feb but you need to go to high latitudes (northern Norway and Sweden) to increase the odds of seeing them. It's not cheap either as you need very good snow clothing to withstand the temperatures up there - I spent a good £300 on gear (the gloves alone were £100) when I went up to the arctic earlier this year to see the aurora myself. And don't kid yourself that you can get by with cheap gear up there, as you'll be taking a serious risk with frostbite or worse - the average temperatures I experienced were around -35C and got as cold as -45C the one day.

You could try Iceland though. It's absolutely beautiful and there is a chance of seeing the aurora, although not nearly as good as earlier in the year and further north. Icelandair have a lot of reasonable package deals, and the entire country is a photographer's dream.

Thanks for the info on that. Guess its probably best to save for that at some point then.
On another tack we've seen a package inc flights hotel n breakfast for just over 400 to Venice. I imagine that would be good for photos. I like doing street and documentary style photography when on holiday as well as obvious snaps. Any thoughts, experiences?

Yes, Venice is absolutely wonderful. March is a good time to go too, before it gets too hot and overrun by tourists. I could barely tear myself away from my camera when I visited as everywhere you look, there's something worth shooting.
