There's something not quite right about this one. Just doesn't quite 'click' for me. I find the buoy a tad distracting and believe there is a little too much water in the image. I would have also lifted the exposure ever so much to enhance the nice light you have. This is only a quick edit and tell me to F off if you wish, but what about this?

Sorry, not my style! :)
I would ignore you with the greatest calm if your post was
stupid, hostile etc but it is not, far from it!

Fair enough, let's consider your points:
I find the buoy a tad distracting and believe there is a little too much water in the image
I would agree with you had this artificial lake (a trout farm)
been the real sea or a well know large expense of water.
My framing decision (prior to shutter release so it is a FF)
was to illustrate a feature of this rural area and as such will
most certainly join the many others in the catalogue of the
Regional Tourism Office.

This image had then a final purpose that, in my eyes, justifies
it. Out of that context, your crop is quite a pleasing one.

As for the buoy, it is a sign showing that someone has been
thinking about safety… a good feeling!

I would have also lifted the exposure ever so much to enhance the nice light you have.
A reasonable idea that has plenty of merit though I rendered
the shot so to reflect the late afternoon it was taken.
what about this?
Though I would not (for the purpose given before) take such
decisions (as is is the privilege of the client), I recognize that
your edit, seen strictly as a holiday shot, is perfectly receivable
making good sense and showing good taste!

I'm seeing a slight colour cast (calibrated monitor), and haloing along the tree line.
Also I really don't care for the 50/50 horizon, especially as the water in the bottom 1/3 does not really add any interest to the overall image.

The colour cast is the warmer late, late afternoon light.

The water seen close to the camera is revealing, to any
interested sailor, the wind condition… in this case, less
than 2.5 Beaufort, enough to entertain beginners that
are the main clients of the boat rental.

How about a mahoosive crop to get rid of the boring bits, (it's a tourist shot yes?) A liitle tweak and what d'ya think? Just a thought.

I prefer the original, my only alteration would be a bit less water and a bit more sky, but only a small amount.

mahoosive
…took me some time to figure that one out
as english is not my language.

Yes, why not? …that is a good crop for the bottom of a page!

The thing to understand here is, as an image hunter, I must
provide material that will allow the maximum in usage flexibi-
lity to the AD that will include any photograph in some layout.
Your crop is very good but the AD would not go for it because
what ever reason like "won't fit in my layout" if he would have
liked to use it as a centre fold for ex..

In fact, I send, as I do routinely, a small jpg to some seven
offices in the Land (province) and at this point I received six
"brilliant and, among them, four added "we take it!".

Tx for the comment Adam!

Judging by the shadows on the land, it's not that late.

I'll comment because Kodiak is such a good contributor to the forum and helps other peoples posts. I know you don't have much to learn so you can take this as a subjective observation. The highlights in the sky are a tad muted for me, a little kick to the highlights in the top half of the image to get closer to the whites in the boat would help lift it all.

This recognition from you, Craig, touched me. Thank you!
I know you don't have much to learn
At the beginning of my participation to TP, I said that I
was not here to learn but to be inspired. Inspired I was
by all kind of people shooting all kind of thing and I lear-
ned a lot from unsuspected sources: members with very
naive approach but with a devotion to make one fly high!

I'll share a secret with you… come closer. This trade is a
communication and seduction business. When I publish
a shot for a specific or potential client, I must seduce her
or him with pictorial arguments.

This rendition will tell the AD, in a glimpse, the depth of the
recorded data and how he/she may use it. No seduction is
no business.

If I know what is the final use of an image, I know then how
to render it: first the recorded data then the
artistic intent.

Thank you for commenting, Craig.

Lovely image and I really like Craig's edit, that's what I'd go for if it was going to hang on the wall.
Of course, the intended audience for this shot makes the original everything it needs to be, a serene relaxing landscape that I'd want to visit.

Well heavens above I really like this one as it clearly shows movement from left to right of the yacht and the buoy adds to the shot for the simple reason it can play mind games with your thought....is the helmsman going to tack around the buoy or not

Dave

I like it too, interesting sky and well composed

I would probably crop a little water out but just nit picking really

I definitely prefer the big widescreen pano crop! Very pleasing to the eye compared to the other crops.

Must admit I prefer Craigs crop (not chicken!!)) and prefer K's original RENDITION. :)

I tend to shoot 16:9 so like the shape. With this shape the bouy is OK, but in a 6:4, it can be sunk.

My first thought looking at K's original was that the yacht should have been on one third horizontally, but as has been said, laying it back from that 1/3, gives the image a sense of movement...

Anyway, like it.................

An other argument for the choice of composition
is the possible final use by the AD (art director).

This frame will eventually permit to put some title
texte in the water area. A substantial part of my
income is coming from publishings exactly for the
reason that I plan the compositions with many layout
options for graphic use.

That makes sense, never thought of that
