I'm really stuck on what to write on my home page :|

Ok so far i've wrote.

Welcome to fm photography.

I am based in Scotland, Glasgow. I have been doing photography for almost 2 years now. I started out with a point and shoot camera and worked towards my canon SLR. I'm working towards building my portfolio with horses and animals. This year i hope to start....

Does that make sence, Please be honest What else can i say? I want to say something like i'm working towards building my portfolio but open to doing horse events as part of my experience and also personal shoots. etc.

Any help please as i'm clueless on what to say, All my friends are saying look at other equine websites but i dont want to copy someone elses work.

I want to be orginal but it's not really happening for me ha :suspect:

frankee the best advice i can give as im no good at that sort of thing is check other peoples websites out and get a general build up of what you might think would suit your site
unfortunatley you are the only one that can put on what needs to be put on

i dont mena to put a downer on things but it sounds like what you have put up so far is more like a About me page rather than a Home page

and im in the same scenario at the mo im building mine up and my front page well just check it out and you will see it is very much plane untill i can work out what to put

mine says the following, not sure if its of any help

Welcome to my photography site, I have taken a very firm interest in photography of late and after investing in kit and taking alot of pictures I thought it would be a nice idea to share them. I’ve taken an interest in motorsport and landscape photography mainly but will try my hand at anything. Motorsports I have taken an interest in include MotoGP, British Touring Car Championships (BTCC) and British Superbikes (BSB) as well as other local events.

I hope you enjoy looking at my images as much as I did taking them. My gallery and Blog are updated regularly so make sure you keep up-to-date!

If you are interested in any of the pictures or you would like some photographs taken please contact me via the “Contact Us” tab.

It really depends on the purpose of the site and whether it's for potential business clients or just somewhere to show your work.

The text you've used sounds very amateurish and could be off putting to prospective clients. It makes you sound inexperienced and lacking in equipment.

Many photographers keep text to a bare minimum and some don't have any sort of textual information other than their name. Often, text ends up sounding clichéd or naff.

If you do actually want some text here are a few things to think about:

I am based in Scotland, Glasgow – This isn't correct it should be Glasgow, Scotland.

I have been doing photography for almost 2 years now. – If you haven't been into photography for a long period, I wouldn’t draw attention to it.

I started out with a point and shoot camera and worked towards my canon SLR. – This isn't worth mentioning as it sounds like you lack professional equipment or experience with professional equipment.

I'm working towards building my portfolio with horses and animals. – This doesn't sound right (it actually sounds like horses and animals are helping you build your portfolio!). You don't need to say you are "working towards building" just "building" or even better "enhancing".

I'd also consider trying to write in the third person, as this tends to sound more professional (as if written by an agent).

Hope this helps!

As with Garry79, less is more, on my new site I'm hardly going to have any text, infact it will just divert into one of my galleries. My view is if you are a photographer your images should be the main part of your site.

The less information the better.
Just put down where you from and what photography you deal with, and maybe a very small bit about your services like "Prices for our service start from £XXXXX"

Dont put alot of stuff that sounds negative. You could be the best professional in the world, but put that you have less then 2 years experience and your building your equipment and portfolio, they wont bother to find out just how good you really are

Mike

I agree with you 100% with that, I just didnt want to make me sound as if i'm amazing or i'm a total professional. Making myself sound amazing.

Thanks for your help im just going to send you a pm if you can bare with me

Got your PM. Let me think and I'll get back to you.

I think Garry gave you some good advice, and I also think that your instinct to keep it real is very sound. You need to be comfortable with whatever you end up with. You want to feel that it's an accurate representation of who you are and where you are with your photography.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of third-person bios. Nine times of ten you just know that it's self-written. Then it just sounds silly in the third-person. Especially if it's a really glowing bio describing exactly how talented the photographer is.

I've had a think about possible text but it's difficult as I don't know you or your work. So I'll just make a few more suggestions if that's ok?

From your original text it seems that you are into wildlife photography so I'd say that your photographic interests are wildlife but that you specialise in equine photography and equestrian events.

If your are looking for work, then state that you are available for comissioned work and for prospective clients to contact you for a personal quote (this means you don't need to make up generic prices on your site which IMO is never a good idea).

I wouldn't mention what kit you do or don't have as most clients either won't know or won't care about it. Also, unless it's top of the range kit it may affect some people's opinion of you.

You state where you are based but not where you are willing to travel to. Actually you don't state what services you offer either.

It might be worth getting soundbites from previous clients to add to your credibility as well.

If I think of any thing else I'll let you know. As suggested by others, go and look at the sites of photographers that are involved in the same area as you for inspiration.

You don't need to say you're professional. The fact that you state you are available for commissioned work makes that obvious.

Instead of "Welcome to fm photograhy" I'd go with

"Welcome to Francesca Morrison Photography.

Based in Glasgow, but with the ability to travel, I am available for commission based photographic services. Currently I specialise in equine photography and have covered numerous equestrian events ranging from showjumping through to .... . This website represents a selection of my portfolio to date and is updated regularly with my most recent work."

This is just a quick idea to give you a start. I'd change it to suit.

I reckon what Garry's written there is about as good as you need it to be. It sounds professional without alluding to anything specific and it's a nice, friendly welcome to people visiting your site.

You might want to include a line before the 'Currently I specialise in equine photography' to enable you broaden your horizons a little whilst still focusing on what you 'do' but it certainly reads well as it stands.

Just make sure that every single piece of text on your website and any correspondence you send reads just as well. You don't want to let yourself down by failing to maintain a professional appearance throughout.
