Looking to replace my home printer, my current HP Envy 6xxx (8 year old ish) is refusing to feed photo paper from any tray but still prints documents fine and the boss has given the green light to replace it, photo quality with tidy paper is decent and we have a roughly 60/40 split documents to photographs, looking for a decent single unit that can do both, currently use a £3 ink subscription for 50 sheets a month which I'd like to avoid as well, any recommendations?

You don't mention budget or max size of print.

Can I suggest you look at the A4 size ET-8500 eco tank printer.

I have the larger ET-8550 and it gets used for documents as needed but also prints photographs to a IMO very high standard.

Since getting it in IIRC 2022 I am only on my second set of inks. They cost around £80 for the set of 6 inks.

Thanks @Box Brownie, yes A4 apologies anything bigger is a rarity which I'll get printed professionally.

Appreciate the suggestion and gives me somewhere to start, never used that style of ink before, is refilling problematic/messy?

The bottles are keyed to the ports = no way to miss fill. As for messy, no though as the bottle has more in it than than the printer tanks will take you just need IMO to wipe the bottle before replacing the cap....just to keep things clean & tidy

I suggest you read Keith Coopers review of the ET8550 much of which will apply to the 8500.

FWIW I have found the scanner useful too.

I would sum up my view of it as:-
A quite expensive versatile office printer that prints photographs of high quality.
A primary reason I bought it was the Eco Tank aspect.....compared to cartridges of ink the bottles are 'cheap as chips' each bottle contains 70ml of ink so for the approx £80 you are getting 420ml of ink

PS for general printing on A4 paper I have found the best weight is 90gsm.
However, when duplexing I need to be wary of pages with larger graphics........as even with the longest selectable drying time there is a risk paper jams.

IIRC there are also tank printers in the Canon range.

We have the ET 3850 as a general printer (I already had a Canon iP8700 A3+ photo printer when got it, so wasn't looking for a photo printer), but have been very impressed by it, never had a problem with it, and it's easily paid for itself in reduced ink costs compared to the old multi-function printer it replaced (I have bought a set of replacement inks, but not used any yet).
I'd certainly strongly consider an Eco Tank photo printer to when my Ip8700 eventually needs replacing.

Another vote for the Epson eco-tank printers. I also have the ET-8550 (which can print A3). Mostly I use it for A4 printing and scanning and have used it for photos and calendars. I often use it for duplex printing and not had a paper jam yet since May 2023. Perhaps I've been lucky. I'm only on to my second set of inks - it seems amazingly economical.

And yet another vote for the 8550 (and its smaller A4 brother). I also use, downstairs mainly for iPad printing, an Epson ET2750 (probably superseded) which can produce acceptable photos, and is dirt cheap tp run. It's used daily and I've owned it for a few years but I'm only on its second set of inks. Filling is child's play and clean, as long as you cater for a possible drop of ink as you remove the empty bottle. Witness a red blob on my indoor shoes.
