Hello all,

Heading to the maldives in 7 weeks for my honeymoon :) and I need some advice to any extra kit I need to bring with me. At the moment I have a Nikon D40 with standard body lens, remote and tripod.

I am thinking along the lines of filters and what you would recommend (currently have no filters and no real knowledge of them either :( ), don't want to spend big money as money is tight enough as it is. Just some suggestions to try and make the most of my photo opportunity.

Thanks in advance

Clarke

You have to be kidding ?

Leave the camera at home son... seriously :)

I'm sorry but there are so many rude replies I could have put to "Honeymoon - Kit advice needed". I have refrained.

Regarding filters etc. There will be plenty of other suggestions but the main filter I use is a circular polariser. It's great for skies and water.

Look on 7dayshop.com. They're really reasonable.

If landscapes are going to be on the cards, I'd recommend a circular polarising filter. It cuts down on unwanted reflections, and darkens the blues in the sky. I got a secondhand one off here for about £20.

If there's going to be lots of wildlife, maybe a longer lens, something like a Sigma 70-300 (2nd hand for about £100), but if not, or if that's not your thing, I wouldn't worry about it.

If it's just general landscape stuff, then your current kit will be fine (plus maybe the CPL), just practice practice practice!

On your honeymoon eh?

Sounds like you've got it sorted

Not much wildlife in the Maldives from memory. Lots of fish. Maybe an underwater housing ?? That would be a great investment if you like your sealife

circular polariser is the first filter. as said it will give deeper blues to the skies but since you'l be taking sea shots it takes out the reflections from the water surfaces too.

To be honest there just aint that much land out there but i would agree with the cpl

uv and pola filters plus a lens hood, clear plastic bags (big enough to take camera and lens),elastic bands, blower brush, lens wipes spare batteries and a few spare SD cards.
Hope you both have a fantastic honeymoon !

i agree, take a compact, honestly nothing more of a mood killer than whipping your tripod out on the first sign of some action.

no seriously i woulndt take it, sounds like a terrible idea to me. there is a time and a place for photography and a honeymoon requires a compact.

We travel around the Philippines regularly and my advice would be a cpl polarizer filter and a pocket tripod - I use a Manfrotto 709B that fits in my pocket and we use everywhere for taking photos of the two of us using the a remote. Its really sturdy (surprisingly so actually)

Would also recommend (highly) some sort of blower (rocket blower etc..) to blast sand off camera/lens and maybe a camera rain cover if your taking a boat trip (I just got some cheap Op-Tech rain sleeves from the bay for about £6 that work ok and take up no room at all in your bag!)

Above all, enjoy your honeymoon!

now I must admit...the GF keeps going on to me about getting married....if we did and we went on the honeymoon and i took my camera etc....we would only be married a week! haha.

anyway, agree with the majority above, cpl! and just have fun!!

lol guys thanks for all the funny and serious replies. Yea my wife to be is very understanding, she is happy for me to take my camera, once in a lifetime opportunity so want to get some decent shots. Sure we're there for 2 weeks, what else can we do :) :) :) I'll buy myself circular polarising filter and take it from there.

Thanks

WHAT?!!?!? I went to the maldives on my honeymoon years ago and I regret not being so in to photography back then as I am now, with better kit and much more ability. The photos I got are ok, but they would be so much better if I took them now!

Please OP, take your slr. Buy a polariser. You'll love it, it's such an amazing place and if you own an slr you simply HAVE to take it. I don't know what your experience is, but consider taking a photography book or two with you to help you get the most out of it (unless you feel you don't need to). Trust me, it's an amazing opportunity and Im very jealous!

I bought an underwater housing for my video camera to take scuba diving too.

TBH there isn't that much to do there apart from snorkelling/diving/drinking, so having a camera will by no means take over your holiday. We did the PADI course which involved quite a lot of work, abd revising in the evening seemed like a chore but it was worth it. Often my wife would lie in the sun and I'd toddle off with the camera for an hour - I could walk round the whole island in 45 mins.

I am too going on a once in a life time honeymoon next year and i will be taking my camera, my mrs to be actually pushed me into getting a dslr for the honeymoon.

Kit i plan to take is like those already mentioned. camera, memory, lens, tripod, lens hood, CPL, Remote.

We are also taking a compact.

their own brand filters look remarkably cheap - is it a case of you get what you pay for, or are they alright do you know?

I just spent 2 weeks travelling around california and nevada for my honeymoon, took my D60 everywhere and it wasn't an issue. We wanted to see the sites and she took nearly as many on her company as I did :D

If you can afford it I would certainly take an under water camera of some kind
there is so much life even at a few feet it would be a crime not too
( don't forget the mask and snorkel :) )

Must admit - I took my SLR on honeymoon to Sri Lanka - bloody glad I did though - got some real keepsakes!

Only real must have is probably some sort of small tripod/bean bag for those inevitable, and usually not very good, self portraits

Oh, one other thing - it's good to make sure you push the buttons on the other body you're taking as well :naughty:

My son and DIL went on their honeymoon there and the fish and other sea creatures were beautiful so something you can take underwater pics with would be good, maybe a cheap waterproof camera if you dont want to risk your DSLR. Have a wonderful time and make sure you dont get sunburned - that can seriously spoil a romantic holiday!!.
