Yes
The car website I run is quite large now, and I've just about given up with our current hosts - right now it won't even load up.. and the support team are out of ideas after adding in an extra couple of CPU's to the server...

Also turns out they put us on a 'Dedicated Virtual Server' - Not good when we actually pay for a Dedicated Server

The database size is about 3.42gb, so the server needs to be meaty enough to handle at least 400 people connection to the MySQL database at a time (a drop in the ocean compared to this place!)

Was looking at Fasthosts, any suggestions? Can't give you much more info re: bandwidth etc.. as I can't login to the cpanel connection to find out :annoyed:

Dave.

Fasthosts are next to useless for big stuff, if you want top quality connections etc it's not going to be cheap

Try going directly to Rackspace. I got a £200 pcm quote from them previously for dedicated server. :)

Looks like Global Gold are about 15 mins away from where I work!

Thanks for all the suggestions so far :)

Update already!

Spoke to Tim at Global Gold, and we can get the same package as TP which will do us perfect! :D

Thanks for the advice - will probably go with them :)

Dave.

Just to add a conclusion to this thread... we are moved!

Tim at Global Gold couldn't have been more helpful, and the site is running faster than it ever has!

Thanks for the suggestion KayJay!

How were they cost wise?

I deal with many hosting companies where I work, and I cannot recommend Rackspace enough. They go out of their way to ensure that you get what you need. Obviously, they charge for that- hence they are not the cheapest. Some of our clients ignore our advice and go for somebody cheaper- and causes us so much grief :(

Very good! We are on the VBGold package, at £74.99 + VAT per month, compared to what we were paying, and given the speed of the forum now, this is a true bargain! :D (see here: http://www.vbulletinhosting.co.uk/ for more info)

I didn't realise it would cost so much to run a forum like this. I know it is huge and very busy but £200 a month or whatever it is quite an expense for whoever pays the bill. Does this place manage to break even with the advertising and donations it receives?

I'd expect with the google adverts it should be covered :)

Problem is there are too many sharks out there, I can't even begin to tell you how annoyed I am with the previous host....

Bargain!

name and shame them, that's what I do with One.com. They treated me badly as a customer so I placed several reviews around about them saying so. :)

I'll wait until my personal hosting is all moved before saying anything :D lol (which is also going to Global Gold - and happening today!)
