How do I improve taking night-time photography with Sony Cyber-shot camera?

Hi all

I have researched on this subject online and could not find something related to digital cameras rather than SLRs so I thought I'd ask.

I am trying to improve my photography skills and while I am getting better and better at daytime photography I suck at night-time with my Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W300 (full spec: http://www.cameras.co.uk/specs/sony-dsc-w300.cfm)

For example when in clubs with friends my photos come out so bright, I have tried to lower the flash intensity but seems to make very little difference, I don't really like using flash but don't know how the photos can be taken in very low light without using it.

Does anyone have any recommendations on what settings I could apply for night-time photography especially in social situations like bars, clubs, restaurants with camera's like DSC-W300?

I am happy to share some more info! I am really trying to improve! :)

I think your only bet is with turning flash intensity down. With Slrs for example you can adjust other settings like Aperture/Shutter speed and maybe get away without flash.

What settings can you adjust on the camera?

Maybe try getting some tracing paper over the flash to DIffuse it? That will help a little.

( on a side note, 2nd hand SLRs are very good value for money!!!)

Try selecting exposure compensation. I see from the link that the camera will go to -2 so try that and see how it works. Getting good low light shots is usually a challenge on compacts. Not so easy on a DSLR either.
