How do you save your pics?

After that, who is going to bother?

We are in danger of losing the traditional family photo album as no one is going to give digital files in any form the same attention as a photo album - mainly because the album is so easy to take care of. Just put it on a shelf or in a cupboard and look at it occasionally.

No-one I daresay...

But most people will still be printing the pics and putting them in albums/frames won't they... ...and who is going to bother looking at millyuns of negatives either... :suspect:

Digital files are just the new-age storage medium replacing negs so not a lot of difference there really... :suspect: ...just means only the 'better' images get printed rather than wholesale printing of all negs on a roll... ;) ...unless one does one's own processing and only prints selectively... :suspect:

I only get negative processing done on my films now anyway... ...plus digital files on CD for everything from which I then only print/publish/play with the ones I want... :D

:p

On a recent thread here on the subject of 'Does Anyone Print Their Pictures', about 75% of the respondants stated that they did not and only looked at them on screen which makes a mockery of the constant upgrading to get higher resolutions!

It's not the negatives I am bothered about for future generations, it's the actual pictures in an album.

As an example, if you are clearing out the house of a deceased relative and you find a photo album, most peopole are going to sit down with it and have a look through and perhaps see if they can recognise anyone. In the same scenario, if you find a CD it will probably be either thrown out or put on the pile of stuff to keep but will never be seen. Because the album is 'human readable' with no other equipment needed, it stands more chance of survival.

Copy from camera to local workstation
Sync job that copies from workstation to home server (only at this point would I delete from camera)
Home server is using replication to avoid hardware failure impact
Copy job to place additional copy on home media centre pc
Periodically update a removeable drive that is stored at work for additional offsite backup

Should hopefully keep all bases covered.

Copy images from memory card > pc (disk1)
Then some great software keeps this disc (certain folders) sync'd with disk2.
Then about every week/2weeks I backup this onto my external hard drive.

After I have ensured the images are in 3 places- I wipe my memory cards.

Constantly, mozy@home does a backup of my pictures folder- trying to keep up :) for $50 a year, its awesome.
