Hello, I have been reading this thread on flickr...

and was wondering how i would achieve this style of perspective...

with the front of the car close up and the perspective appearing to distort further away,

would i be better using my fixed 50mm lens or my 18-70mm lens?

i really like the effect :)

thanks

Sammy

Getting in nice and close with a wide angle lens would give you this type of perspective.

Put your 18-700mm lens on at 18mm and use your feet to move forward and compose, don't do it with people close up though, they end up pretty freaky looking :)

so obviously the fixed lens is erm fixed lol so just go as close as possible low down and at the front?

what sort of aperture would you use?

any other settings i should use? center focus? or wide?

so in theory could i achieve the first picture with my fixed 50mm? (shot composition only i mean)

thanks for the quick reply.

Just a really wide angle lens. Nothing fancy. You'd get an impresion of it at the 18mm end of your zoom but could do with a bit wider really.

It doesn't need to be as wide as a fish eye.

Something like 10/11mm on crop or 16/17mm on full frame is enough.

Here's a crude example I've to hand..

i don't have a fish-eye lens sadly, got an adaptor but its pretty poor.

could you explain your post in beginner terms for me please?

basically just wanting help on how to use my kit (Sony A200 DSLR) and the above lenses to achieve this :)

appreciate the help :D

All you need is a wide angle lens. Your 18mm isnt really quite wide enough to get that persepective, but it will get close. Ideally you'd want a lens in the 10mm range, like the Sigma 10-20mm.

Wide angle lenses focus very close, so in the picture above of the bike, My guess would be that the lens was very close to touching the bike tyre. This is what gives that perspective, get as close as you can and as wide as you can.

It's not a fish-eye, just a very wide angle lens used very close. If you shoot with a lens like that close up, that's the exagerated perspective effect you get, whether you want it or not ;) Something like a 10-20mm zoom, around the 10mm end, easy as pie.

Edit: crossed post with Tom.

Probably not with a 50mm.

Because you are going to have to get quite close to your subject I think you'll have to use a smaller aperture to get the DoF.

Sorry yes - that was 10mm on a crop camera (Canon 40D)
