How many lenses went up in price today

Yes
Just checked camerapricebuster and found that 39 leneses have reached their highest price ever on the site. Not good for the industry as people will not buy if they think they are not getting good value. Why do companies always revert to upping prices in a recession rather than working on becoming more efficent.

Choccy...

I was in Ffordes last week and they were stuffed with lenses. The manufacturers have put increases of up to 20% on their lenses so they were trying to buy ahead.

Currency changes are partly to blame but I tend to agree with your thought; if volume dips then margin must go up.......:(

Or buying in low and selling at a high price, thereby making a nice little profit.

Typical innit? I've just had an excellent payrise (because I'm worth it) and have decided to get a D90 when I get my bonus in March, and up go the prices.
I do agree though, most people will wait and see if they come down again before buying so these companies are probably shooting themselves in the foot. Keep the prices a little lower and sell more.. or is that a too simplified thought?

I was really laying any "blame" with the manufacturers. If a trader buys well against the market then that is up to him/her how they decide to sell - as it is with us how we decide to buy. (y)

i think a lot of increases are down to the fact the £ is so weak in comparison to the $ or the Euro (20-30% down) which when as most suppliers do deal in $s then shipments that were costing say$1000s a time are now costing $1300 approx and the supplier has to put these costs on somewhere....

the unfortunate thing however is when the £ regains its strengh the majority of suppliers hold their prices

This is why they get in trouble when things get difficult.

I went to buy some lenses last friday night and they offer me with the new prices.. old lenses but they still add the 20% on the price, which is not rigth since they have those lenses on stock ... but yet some people (shop) just want the money, dont care about the consumers ... I'm my opinion I am not buying anything until prices get back to normal or cheaper.....

As I mentioned in another thread, the Tokina 12-24 is now £115 more than it was before Xmas at Dovercourt  (£330 to £445)

:cautious:
Thats an increase of over 34%, thats just crazy...and wrong!!!

These increases are across the board from all companies - the retailer has little option but to absorb the increase and hope to still sell products. That is the same for the high st and the indie/bigger shops. The real downer is that like the national insurance 1p increase, once things go up, they rarely come back down as the buyer adjusts to the new prices.

Even the Nikon 50mm f1.8 has risen in price by £10-15.

Wow, Damn glad I got mine at £200 in November (admittedly used)!

I bought an absolute shed load of stuff last week. I don't really need any of it yet, though I expect I will do for the spring/summer, and I figure that the money I save by buying it all now will more than cover the extra interest I'll be paying. But I'm scared to look at CPB, in case the stuff I've bought doesn't go up in price...!

The rise is generally because of the weak pound more than they try to make a profit, however this is from a manufacturer point of view.

But the massive price hike on the high street is really driven by greed. Think about it even with a 20% rise, that's factory price, these shops are increasing their retail price by 20% now that means their profit margin has also respectively gone up by 20%. And these are the less greedy ones. The more greedy ones are the ones hike their retail price up by over what the manufacturer has done.

All in all, the situation is disgusting. Importing stuff from America or Asia is looking far more viable, assuming you are on holiday out there and buys it yourself for yourself.

I wouldn`t mind but people want your used stuff for nothing.

I was looking at B&H prices last summer, it was cheaper on every Canon lens (except the 50mm 1.8) to buy it from B&H, pay $100+ shipping and insurance, pay 4% EU import duty (I think it was 4%, may have been 6%) and then 17.5% UK VAT compared to UK prices... Buying multiple lenses and saving on P&P would have saved a mint, might even have slipped past Customs but is highly doubtful

Retailers have had it easy for far too long with their 33.3% + markup. its about time they realised people are not now prepared to pay the astronomical prices in the UK compared to other countries. Example, in the USA a lens comes with a 4 yes 4 year warrantee even though their prices are that much cheaper.
Not so long ago I bought a Sigma lens from a shop I use in Hong Kong a third cheaper than this country and that included p/p and import duty, exactly the same spec as over here.

Rip Off Britain is comming to an end, retailers need to realise they are now competing in a world wide market place not the local town or city.

I much rather pay a few pounds more and buy from a local camera shop (few and far between I know) and be able to try the item out and return should I need too.
Buying from overseas has it's drawbacks.

It's now more expensive for me to buy the kit I bought in September and that's before adding the price of the memory card. My main concern is that even if the economy improves, the savings won't get passed on :(

I bought 1d mk3 last week. The next day it went up £510. I was very lucky as there is real problem with Canon stocks, cos I also got a 35mm f1.4 L and that was 1 of only few available till the Canon shipment hopes to arrive later this week in the UK......

The 70-200 VR hasn't gone up yet.....better get one bought sharpish ;)

The prices on CPB, the ones that are still showing the old prices, when you phone them up to buy/check stock, every one has had no stock, and will only supply at the new prices, I phoned over 12 retailers over the last couple of weeks.

Hence my order arrived today from HK+ I did not get caught for Tax :)

Sometimes an invoice for tax/inport duty arrives a week later in the post, very good chance if your order was delivered by DHL unfortunately

Yeah, specialist retail has always been such a boom area of the UK economy, I wonder why I never considered it as my "Dragon's Den idea" ...

The traditional camera shop was undercut by the chainstores who in turn got destroyed by shops from the Far East on the internet and just as everything else, the constant outcry for cheaper and cheaper prices (seen on this thread and everywhere else) will be the reason why your job will be done by an Indian next week and why the UK is in such a **** poor state financially.

Quit whining, its only camera gear. If you want to complain, complain about your food costs or council tax going up.... :bat:

Unfortunately it's unlikely the prices will drop when the market starts to suffer, as in the case of petrol, and gas and electric prices, ok petrol has dropped a bit but nothing like it should have done, considering it was $150 a barrel a few months ago, and now it's about $49 still no surprise there, as far as retailers go if they try it on the quicker they go to the wall the better, it's just pure greed

Sounds like you didn't phone Warehouse Express. I've got lots of stuff on order and backorder with them, and they guarantee to honour the price that was showing on the web site when you placed the order.

Au contraire, the petrol price has done exactly what it should have done.

When you buy a lite of unleaded for say 88p, you're paying about 66p in tax and 22p for the product. I don't know what proportion of that 22p is the actual raw materials and how much is the costs of refining, distribution, marketing, retailing and profit, but for the ake of argument let's say it's spilt 50/50. Then if the crude price trebles from $50ish to $150ish, the price of a litre goes up from 88p to 110p.

Stocks may be low because companies don't have the capital to purchase goods in advance.

Here is a good example of the price hikes. http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/prod239.html

In 12 days the price went from it's lowest ever to it's highest. And the government has just given the banks more of our money.

I always get it shipped via EMS, not the fastest service but it usually arrived in about a week, or source it elsewhere if they refuse to use EMS,

Never had to pay any duty in over a dozen shipments over the last two years. :)

Yes Stuart, tried them, they would source the gear, but would not give me any idea of arrival/ shipment of the Items.

Payed up front with Jacobs on a few items, at least they gave me a date of first 10 days of Feb, and they were good, old price deals lets see if they do supply.

I can only hope.(y)

i was lucky as i order my 50 1.8d just after new year when it was still £70, a few days after i back ordered, it went to the current £89. it's pretty disgraceful how much it's gone up!
