How many shots?

I often read people saying how many shots there camera has taken (whats a better way of describing this?)
How do you go about finding this out?

Number of actuations. On a non-pro body I think you just have to make an estimate based on the file numbers.

It's also quite commonly called the shutter actuation count. You can download a piece of software called opanda IExif to figure this out. Simply open your last photo in opanda and look for the shutter count property on the exif.
