Just wondering how much I would be looking on spending on getting a website built with the following features:

Home Page
About Page
Portfolio
Password Protected Client Areas
Prices Page
Customer Review Page
Contact Page

The option to add extra pages in the future.

Thanks

It could be a case of how long is a piece of string .
It would depend on how detailed your pages are, and if you are going to upload the pictures yourself , or get the developer to do it .
A starting ball park figure using a unique layout would be around the £400 mark

You already have a website that can do all that for you.

Not if you want it done properly it wouldn't. Try doubling or trippling that figure (at a minimum) if you want a decent bespoke website with a gallery and password protected pages.

A £400 website is like a Wedding photographer that charges £400 for an 8 hour coverage and bungs all the images onto a CD without PP'ing them!

I'm a complete nubie in web pages/hosting but I looked at this website yesterday. Would be interesting to hear someone's thoughts on them for what you get?

Is this what you mean OP ?

He already has a Photium site, and they're damned good. You won't hear too many bad words about them other than from people who aren't keen on the templates.

I can only echo what DemiLion has said...

£400 would barely cover the cost of the graphic design work at most companies, not to mention any coding or hosting.

If you want professional quality at a reasonable price, try looking for an experienced freelance developer/designer with a good reputation.

do it yourself.. easy to learn.. its not even programming.. max about 40 quid for domain and hosting :)

Yup, I completely agree with that. Almost all of the specialist photography sites will allow you to customise enough to make it look unique (usually if you opt for the pro package), and offer all of the requirements listed above.

Otherwise there are a huge number of tutorials and Javascript packages available for free on the net that will show you how to self design and develope a site.

I disagree with doing it yourself. If that's the case why don't mums just buy a nikon d3100 and do pics themselves, or brides buy the same and give it to Uncle Henry?

Sure, if you know a lot about IT then maybe do it yourself, although I would say in most cases a pro would do a better job.

What do you want the site to be? A gallery or a real business tool that will pay for itself? If the latter you will need it to be good in terms of SEO as well as look good. You need it to work on all browsers, be compliant and look professional. I would guess that anything half decent would be atvleast £750, more likely £1000-£1500

+1

Do it yourself, domain and hosting is dirt cheap and the cost of a book on HTML cost next to nothing (free from your local library)

You can get any software need for the gallery and payment system for free too.

Simon, I'm not in anyway trying to cause trouble, but did have a VERY quick look at your site and noticed the following :)

Indeed. Why as photographers do we (as a generalisation) always complain about the newbies/inexperienced doing weddings or portraits and asking for settings etc, then in the next breath, suggest people do their own websites, rather than paying a professional to do them?

Seems a bit hypocritical, no?

In a way...

However most togs are tech heads who can get their heads round these things.

Also, doing your own website, the only person you are likely to let down is yourself, there is no 'client' as there would be for an amateur tog pretending to be a pro.

I tought myself how to use a CMS, how to configure it, how to make it workable into my workflow. If I paid someone else to do this the likelyhood would be I would have trouble getting across my exact requirements. Also, being a relatively new event tog, I did not necessarily know what those requirements were. These requirements change over time as well, my website is on it's 3rd or 4th iteration now as I have new requirements. I'm now at the stage where I can upload shopping carted galleries taken that day within 30 minutes of getting home, add navigation, new pages etc at the touch of a button, without going near any html. I don't think I could have commissioned a site to be made that fits MY workflow so perfectly without spending a fortune, and still spending a lot of time in meetings or on the phone with the web developer getting my points across.

I go back to my main point earlier though that the only person you will let down/disadvantage by doing your own is yourself. I do agree with you to a point though and if you're likely to spend weeks trying to get it all working and still not have it right I would recommend you get someone else to do it.

Completely agree

I use wordpress with a theme I have customized to suite my needs, it also does everything else you mention without any really trouble

I worked for a well known company with 150 people on the website development and testing side of things, and their "Solution" to problems like the above was to add a bit of code that would show a page that said "This site only supports Internet Explorer" if you didn't use IE!

That's what 2 million pounds worth of website gets you

But they do if they cant afford a pro.. also making a website is relatively easy to be fair.. you can get a free template and within a day change it to how you want it to look.. for 40 quid and no knowledge at all you could ahve your own website up and running in no time..

seriosuly.. its not even a hard thing to do :)

Ok, well I have my photium one for now is it possible to make my site with something like wordpress and then make it go live and end my photium one if im happy with the one I have made?

Yeah, its simple enough to do

I had originally set mine up to /blog or /test I think it was

you can created a folder in your www (part of FTP) and call it whatever you like, upload wordpress into there, create a batabase in your cpanel then follow the instructions to set it up

it doesnt take long to setup, once done, you can then set everything up to how you want, to change it to live simple remove everything folder (for your currect site) and move everything into the live site

you will then need to change the links on your blog in the PHPMyAdmin or you can do it before copying (I did it the PHPMyAdmin way

sounds complicated but its quite straight forward to be honest

give me a shout if you want something setting up and I can talk you through it

I also have a different business - www.talkingbusinessltd.co.uk - when I was looking at my 1&1 account details I noticed a new business site template... £9.99 a month for everything. May not be great gallery wise, but you can have one, but looked good and easy to use. Can have password pages too.

i have had bad times with 1&1, everytime i hear that name from ***, i cringe.

Zenfolio is a perfect for photographers wishing to show images and sell online.
If you dont want to sell online, then you dont activate it..
£60 a YEAR! for the best package, I think thats a good deal!
Im saving SO much time!
