How someone new in the forum can buy or sell?

Hello everyone,
I registered today as I read somewhere one can sell his equipment here. Yet, I have no access to selling or buying, and while the former makes some kind of sense, the latter doesnt. What is the logic behind not allowing a new member to buy something from others?

Having said that, can anyone help me with a genuine website to sell a camera and some lens. Gumtree and ebay is full of clowns.

You just need to make a certain amount of posts first. Somewhere in the rulings ;) Be patient, and they`re a good bunch here :)

And meaningful posts - minimum 25 and a time limit too, You can;t suddenly add 25 posts and get access as the admin get very suspicious about people coming on here with the specific intention of taking advantage of the classifieds to sell their gear. Only in a very few instances do transactions go sour, but not amongst new members though.

Be patient, and don't expect that what you want will be available. Some things go in the blink of an eye, other things stay around for a long time.

You need 25 meaningful posts and be a member for at least 30 days I think.
They dont make it easy to find the criteria...even I couldn't find it. :)

Be prepared for some frustration on here when selling equipment, this site isn't good for that unless you are happy to sell for next to nothing.

I listed some stuff on eBay last night and it was all sold when I woke up this morning. £1 seller fees on this weekend too.

Classifieds sales performance depends on your kit if you’ve moved onto mirrorless like Sony it’s not bad at all, if like me your stuck on Nikon/Canon relics then it’s glacially slow!

I undertand Peter, I am 47 year old. I ll keep this forum for reading other stuff rather as a platform for sell and buy. It must be very weird when phtoogrpahers sell gear, i hear you

I see. Yes, ebay has the £1 fee promo for 4 days. But on normal days, the 10% fee is insane, you cant sell anyhting like that there.

Camera equipment tends to sell for much higher values on eBay than elsewhere so even with 10% fees, it is usually a good option. Bear in mind that on here people will try and bargain you down to the same prices that dealers buy at so generally you will get more value from eBay.

Agreed, but the same goes with new stuff, one reason or the other you didnt use something and you dont want to loose much but everyone wants it for nothing as Tommy said. I guess this is the same for everything in life, you buy a car and you lost 30% by turning the key.

I see and I understand what you mean. They take advantage of the quotes you would get from the dealers minus the post/get paid hassle. Retailers are dispicable, they give whatever offer and you can see right there how much the sell it used. Crazy.

You also can get scammed on eBay.
My friend a while back had someone claim money back after like 4 months. Clearly the guy had done something to the equipment but no PayPal allows you to just get the money back.

It's not all that crazy when you consider they need to pay staff, bills, rent etc.

At least one of the reason for the limitation is a lot of it works on trust rather than buyer/seller protection like with PayPal.

There are many way to see everytnig in life. On the point that something broke 4 months down the road, I dont think anyone would give money back and how one can be sure this was planned? I do get it about rents etc, what I do not get is you sell a lens that new cost e.g. £100 they buy for £40 and they sell for £80. I have rent too to pay...

Can only go on my own experience on eBay.

I have never had any issues.

Up to about 18 months maybe 2 years ago my wife had an eBay shop selling small value items mostly clothes, on average she would sell around 50-60 items a week. Yes occasional refunds had to be made and a couple of times items were lost in the post but she never really had any issues. She had the shop for about 5 years.

And to be fair it is easy to get scammed on here and it's not like it hasn't happened before.

That's true. Just saying the risk is there :)

Sure but I am sure you don't like being used as a free rental service for someone's next holiday ;)
You don't need to go very far to find scams, just search the history on this forum.
I use eBay too but it's not risk free is all I'm saying.

Their rent and yours is different. Their margin on used items is rather low. In your example above they'd make like £10-15 max. It's not like shops are minting it on the contrary a lot of them struggle.

And just to extend your example on here for that item you can expect to get £50-60 on here.

Whilst rent is important, life isn’t just about making as much money as possible. That way lies pandemics!

this is a community and selling here is more like selling to friends, colleagues, neighbours. So you may get less money, but you may get a warmer feeling.

You sound like a retailer. I will respectfully disagree. I don’t care how much rent you have if you cant afford it get a small place. You cant buy for nothing and sell to make 100% profit. To my, such a way seems the retailer lost track of his accounting budget. I would never sell to a retailer.

Not sure what “being used as a free rental service for someone's next holiday” means.

You try to simplify and make the retailers look like Mother Teresas. The amount of gear they get in is insane and covers times their rent, their underpaid staff, their kid's rent, the rent of the second and third house etc. I will not reply to further comments on the retailers who buy used, to me they are money sharks.

Having said all that, I have seen from car dealers to take-away food how people try to make money by not spending money, just because they have a “store”. And that is why Amazon is killing them off, as you can just give back something new even months after you bought it, and that is a fact I know well. My bad I got all that gear from another place and this COVID-19 halted my plans and now need to unload it.

And yes, 50 or 60 would be great, I agree. But think I have a body that cost £900 and a lens again of that price range, brand new not even opened and your rent-stressed chaps would give me £400 at best for each. No way man, no way! I ll take the private photographer every time and be happy they saved some money.

I think you have to continue to make meaningful posts, something about percentages I think. I don't think you can just post 25 post, then just post only once in a while, and still have access to the classifieds. I think you have to be seen to be a regular contributor.

That is a great point! Very well said. I always feel good when something (not just cameras) goes to good hands.

I am not a camera retailer but I know people who work in camera shops, I know some shop managers really well and there are couple I know of on this forum too.
All I can say they are not money making sharks. Whether you choose to trade with them or not is up to you of course, it's a free country ;)

That is one hell of a rant.

I have traded into dealers quite a few times and found WEX to be excellent, they have often offered more than what I could sell on here for. When I switched from Nikon to Sony I put up a fair few items for sale here and there was not a lot of interest even though they were priced very well. Took the lot to WEX and as a trade in they offered over £800 more than I advertised them for sale on here.

About 4/5 months ago I decided to upgrade one of my Sony cameras and put it for sale here at a fair price because I wanted another A9.

I ended up trading that camera into WEX as well as they had a promo on. In the end I actually saved about £80 by trading into them and buying U.K stock than I would have done selling here and buying a grey import camera from China.

It helps building hope relationship with certain retailers. Even though wex aren't buying for cash at the moment they offered to buy my 24GM for cash. Gave me an extra voucher plus a little off their used lens.
It works both ways :)
Have them on WhatsApp lol

Edit:
I am not pro- or anti- any of the methods of selling. In fact I use all of them myself i.e. forums, eBay, Gumtree, shops etc. Just saying all of them have their pros and cons that's worth being aware of.

I wouldn't go getting your hopes up in this forum, a lot of the time forum members offer less than dealers offer, everyone is after a bargain!

Same here at my local shop I have the personal mobiles of the manager, the assistant manager and 1 of the sales staff. I have a strong relationship with them, then again I am probably their best customer.

They return my support of them in many ways, I have had wedding referrals from them. When the store had a make over due to the switch over from Calumet to WEX they offered to pay me to run a wedding workshop for the official open day and they have offered me other workshops as well.

They also seem to have a genuine interest, follow me on social media and when I am in the shop they often say, seen that wedding at xxxxx xxxx, loved that particular photo etc.

I find them great.

Just to close that subject. If retailers need 100% profit, they would have serious problems with brands, becuase I WORK IN SUCH a store and i know our profit on new equipment is 8%. So yeah, dont try to justfy they make tons of money from the poor photographer, they use and abuse the poor photographer. But hey, you have your reasons. And please, dont pull the free country card, its lame.

Great first impression there starting off with calling people lame. I was simply making conversation and for some reason you are getting agitated.
I am out of here.

I dont know your name, you are the only one that doesnt have one. Are you a bully? you start to sound like a bully. You just made a statement about my start, but that is your opinion, yet you seem to make it like the forum's opinion as if you are the pod-boss. No you did not want a conversation, you wanted are pro-retailer and you wont have it any other way. Well guess what, started or not, I have my own opinion and calling "a free country" taking advantage of people is the same with the PayDay loans went on for years. Yes, a strech, but you do get the point. I dont have any reason to be against your own beliefs, but its is wrong to work with 100% profit on simple people when you work with 8% at max with new equipment. All the best, I cant stick around to reply to you anymore, but you can have the last word, I know you need to.

Wow! :$

Talk about blowing something out of all proportion.

The 100% profit thing you keep mentioning is nonsense btw.

Congratulations. You've just shown yourself as someone that nobody with any sense would buy from. You'd be a nightmare.

@LucciSaint

I understand your disappointment at realising that you couldn't just sign up to the forum just so you could buy & sell gear but there really is no need to take it out on others and no, people having opposing opinions to yours are not bullies.

As has already been said, the criteria for access to the classifieds is 25 posts and 30 days membership but I will say that, whilst achieving 25 posts is quite easy (you're already half way there), posting aggressively towards fellow members will make it extremely difficult to reach 30 days membership.

It might be better to simply sell your items to a dealer, and possibly for a little less, just to get it sold. Otherwise, it might not be worth all the stress of joining a forum, making posts, and having to deal with all the replies you are getting. If on the other hand, you wanted to join a photo forum, and share hints and tips, and learn from others. Then this place can be an OK place to hang out. ;)

It was that sensible suggestion that kicked things off further up the thread.

I've bought quite a lot of gear on here (and sold a fair few bits) and every transaction has been sound. The only complaint is that some are remiss when it comes to leaving feedback i.e. they don't bother.

The prices that things are sold for on here are normally very good too - a few try it on, but they soon get told it in one way or another.

I wouldn't buy or sell anywhere else now . . .

Agreed, but the same goes with new stuff, one reason or the other you didnt use something and you dont want to loose much but everyone wants it for nothing as Tommy said. I guess this is the same for everything in life, you buy a car and you lost 30% by turning the key.
Well 20% of that new car depreciation is the vat! So 10% isn’t that bad!
I know what you mean people want something for nothing and that’s fine but I’d rather sell at a lower price here than risk somewhere else but that said the access requirements here are minimal to non existent, another forum I use is 1000 posts/1 year which is much better for rooting out for trouble makers!

I'll just add that over time, we've become suspicious of people just joining and immediately wanting access to the classifieds. They tend to be people who don't actually add that much to the forum but just want to take advantage of the free audience.

As a result, it's important to note that 25 posts and 30 days isn't a guarantee of access, it's just a guideline. Somebody who hasn't bothered to post anything anywhere else, god forbid an image or two, but highlights they want access to the classifieds is quite likely to find that access restricted indefinitely.
