hi,

i want to send photo's into a non league football paper but i need to caption a photo,

could anyway tell me how i do that please

Its unlikely that they want something written on the photo itself, they are probably talking about you providing IPTC data to say what the photo is of...

Hi James. I'd be interested to know what 'ought' to go in. I use photoshop's file info dialog and currently just put the teams names, date of match and final score and batch process. I guess I ought to be more precise. How the heck does anyone get to know who the players are? I know my own team but the visitors only have numbers on their backs, and if you are trying to capture faces its hard to figure out who's who. I often look for different colored boots or tattoos and try and match 'em up later (even with a team sheet in my hand). Any tips?

You have to remember that the picture editor recieving the files has absoloutly no idea whats going on... he needs to know exact names of teams and players in the picture... what is happening in the picture and the current score... he also needs to know who you are. your licence info (so he knows he is ok to use it) and any other info. where you are (ie ground) and what date the picture was taken... copyright info... credit info and i also add all my bank tranfer details..i also add no free usage notice . all this should be in the IPTC.. Dont rely on your name and date in the email... all this info has to be in IPTC so lets say he wants to use a pic of player X in 6 mths time.. his system will search pics on file looking through IPTC not through emails

Bloomin' heck! How on earth do you remember all (he needs to know exact names of teams and players in the picture... what is happening in the picture and the current score..) that?

you do it as it happens :) thats why you see togs on laptops throughout the game... Or you make notes.. mark file number and note whats happening.. or use the cameras sound record if you ahve it...

The only time I've seen that was when ALL the press in the world came to the Port Vale FA cup match. Never seen togs with laptops. The local press boys just give their compact flash card to the office and let em get on with it, as far as I can make out ... I think I would need an assistant.

you ahve never seen a tog with a laptop at football?

the OP is asking how he captions for the non league paper... well as the non league paper has a later deadline (6pm IIRC) then he can make notes and add after the game... But he MUST put in all the details I mentioned.. thats the way its done..giving your card over to the office has no captioning so nothing to do with the question and a totally different scenario and way of working..

Hardly ever! Mind you there's only a couple of photographers who show up regularly and I think they either work for an agency or the local press. When we had the 'big boys' there they seemed to have an 'assistant' sitting by doing the laptop thing. Good to know these different ways of working, I'd have to practise before wanting to submit images that way. If you caption them poorly, does that mean they don't get used?

Depends whos on the recieving end..in this business the one person you dont want to upset is a picture editor.. you dont want any picture editor thinking dont use tog X,Y or Z cus they cant even caption.. so you really do need to get it right..

Spelling is a biggy.. as is correct names.. the last thing a paper wants is someone complaining they put a wrong name to a player or misspelt a name.. the picture editor relies on YOU for all the info.. chances are the person writing the match report wont even see the pics until published so no use relying on them..

Local papers can be a little different.. I ahve a local paper whos reporter is at every game.. been going to my games longer than me and knows exactly who everyone is.. she doesnt care if i caption or not as she prefers to do her own.. I can just send her a selection of pics and she does the rest.... But you have to know who your sending the pics to and what they want you to do..a working relationship so to speak..
