ive seen some before and after pics in this forum where the sharpness of the picture is increased dramatically! im using gimp (but if PS needed, ill switch) and want to know how to get similar results..
There are a few ways of how to do this in the GIMP.
The simplest ones are using the Sharpen filter or the Unsharp mask filter.
Here's a link that shows how it's done: http://world.std.com/~mmcirvin/gimp_tutorial/sharpen.html
When using Unsharp mask, I recommend using a small radius (up to 0.5) and amount of up to 1.5 for smaller images, depending on how much your image needs to be sharpened.
If you have a large image, you might need to increase the radius. How much depends on the image and its size.
You can also use a very big radius (50+) and very small amount (0.1-0.5) to increase local contrast of an image. You can see an example here: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=686542
