In case anyone is interested in an answer to your original question, with Capture NX-D you can use the adjustment manager to save your current adjustments to an .nxd file (which can be reloaded at any time), after which it's safe to use the revert (restore) button to go back to the original unedited version. If you accidentally hit the revert button without saving your adjustments first, you can use Edit->Undo (or ctrl-Z) to go back to the previous state. Individual settings can be reverted by selecting 'Recorded Settings' in the pull-down menu for each tool.
