Yes
my little cousins play rugby and I offered to go along one day to take pics, thing is, I only have 18-55mm and a 70-300mm lenses, would I need to get hold of faster lenses or can I manage it with just these? (action shots being the main problem)

sorry, bit of a stupid question lol!

If it's a sunny day the 70-300 should be fine, I used a Tamron 28-300 to take shots at my sons football matches with good results :)

oh, wickeds, i just haven't done any of this type of photogrpahy before!

but as its a family thing, I suppose no pressure!

You'll need a high shutter speed at 300mm to reduce 'wobble' (at least 1/300s) so if it's dull you'll have to crank up the ISO until you get the exposure you want :)

Use a higher ISO speed till you get the shutter speed you need.

OOOkayyyy, thankyouu!! (I actually hardly ever use the 300mm, i really should use it more!)

Have you got a dog? When I got my nikon 70-300VR I used her while playing/running to test how quick it focused at different distances.

Should be fun I used my daughter to thro her fav toy

Also, remember that blurring caused through slower shutter speeds can be used to create interesting speed/action images. Also, look for fairly static moments like line-outs where you can anticipate the action and be ready to capture explosive action confined to a small area.

Have a look in the "Sport" forum for ideas of shots to take.
If the boys are small..kneel down at get on their level.

oh, thats a nice shot

which lens/settings if you remember
It's in the EXIF:
Exposure Time: 1/500 sec
F-Number: f/2.8
Focal Length: 160.00 mm
ISO Speed Used: 280

EXIF data is basically information about the photo which is embedded in it. If your mate sends you an MP3 it may well show up in iTunes with the name of the song or the band - this is the same principle, except for photos. (Although the information in an MP3 will probably be added manually, whereas a digital camera can store certain information automatically).

I would imagine that most photos posted on here retain the EXIF data intact, so you can view on your own computer the settings used by other forum members when they took the photo. Have a search of the technical section for suitable software for reading the EXIF data. I'm on a Mac, so I don't know what's best for Windows.
