Just spent a very informative 2 hours at a studio nearby learning the basics of lighting, metering, background managment etc, and I had a blast. It's amazing how simple it all seems...when someone's explained it thoroughly! Can't wait to get back over there next month to do a proper shoot!

I'd list the guys name and his studio, but I don't want to break any advertising rules :p

Sounds great, I find it much easier to learn when I see things in reality rather than just reading and then trying to turn words into actions!

Have fun next visit, hope you remember most of what you learnt :)

I'm already starting to forget bits  so I've begun writing them down! I'm holding onto the finer points, like metering etc, they're too important to forget and I get the feeling they'll make my life much easier next time!

It was so nice to have it explained, then demonstrated, and then to have the chance to do it yourself. It cost me £50 for over 2 hours of tuition, and I even got some half decent photos. The studio itself was in a lovely secluded location right away from roads so you can easily work totally free from distractions, it's definately going to become a regular trip for me! Next time it'll be just me and my model (my wife's wonderful lmao) so we're doing some ahem, 'artier' stuff aswell.

Simply having better lighting and a bit of a helping hand has already improved the quality of my images ten fold...now if I could just get to grips with GIMP!

Glad you found it helpful.
I teach studio lighting myself, and people are always amazed at how much they can learn in a day, and at how much it improves their photography.

The current trend seems to be to rely on creativity, to let skill build up all by itself and to forget about knowledge. A lot of people seem to believe that, with digital photography, knowledge can be replaced with trial and error. It doesn't work, especially with studio lighting, where knowledge is all-important and where trial and error usually just produces error.

The point is, photogaphy is a mix of creativity, knowledge & skill. These 3 factors form a triangle that's rock solid - and it can't stand up if any one of them is missing.
