I keep seeing this style of photo when it is slightly grainy. I would love to know how it is done?

I am reasonable at photoshop so once i get a pointer in the right direction i would be able to create it i hope :)

With curves you can select maybe 3 equal points on the diagonal line, the lower down the line you are (to the left) the darker the tone you are altering so you emphasise the level of contrast you want (shadows, mid and bright)

With selective colouring (the way i'd try to achieve the results) would be to select the colour you want to emphasise then turn down the other sliders and turn up the black slider to deepen it. Finish off with selecting black and again turn up the blck slider to really darken those shadows.

Thats a really simple method and may not be what you are looking for (i'd have to see the originals first) but should give an effect similar to the images you've posted.
