#1 is excellent everything perfect, Focus, Lighting, Detail , Composition

Both good but #1 wins for me.

Love the first as well, wish I could capture something like this.
I'm just getting into macro and would love some advice:
firstly, black background - dropped in or is it an indoor setup?
Secondly, how do you get the critters to stay still long enough to use focus stacking (assumption)?

Thanks Jimi! Both shots were taken outside using this set up:
Nikon D7200
Tamron 60mm F2 (on 36mm extension tube)
Nikon SB-400 off camera Flash
Godox 20cm Soft Box

These shots were holding the leaf up with no background which is under exposed to make it black.

Impressive - I have a Pringles tube flash extender so will try to darken the ambient more in mine. I guess OCF helps too.

Two very nice shots Neil, great detail, spot on exposure, and good composition. Probably #1 just edges it for me but very little in it.(y)
