Wow this is all crazy!! Isn't it funny that at weddings, there are cute children (and up here, usually cute little boys in kilts!) and EVERYONE is clicking away??? In 10 years I have never seen any parent stop anyone taking their childrens pictures in this case! And of course they end up all over Bebo and Facebook etc.

Yet as a pro, it is a battle to get permission to post images on a pro website sometimes.....

But it's kind of a sexist thought you have, where immediately it's the Men's fault. Saying Men aren't always the bad guys, generally means you have trust issues against men. Why don't you keep your eye's on Female togs on their own? Why did you not say it's not always the woman?

I to agree with most comments witheld in this thread, except your's. It's worrying people have the thought that any MAN could be a Paedophile.
 
I do think it's interesting that when you have a male school teacher found sleeping with a 15 yo school girl it's paedophile rapist destroys promising young girl's career as saint, whereas when you have the female school teacher sleeping with a 15 yo boy it's wa-hey geddin there son blimey I wish I'd been so lucky.
 
IMO a lot of this paranoia in instigated is perpetuated by the 'powers that be'.

By that i mean that if you keep a society living in fear its far easier to nibble away at their civil liberties and ultimately control them.

And four police officers to talk to one person with a camera, blimey looks like robbers , burglars , rapist and murderers are on holiday then !!

Oh the naivety.... I have worked with convicted pedophiles and the victims of Pedophiles in a professional capacity. I have to say a majority of this kind of offending is 'interfamillier' IE family or close friends of the family offending.

So by your logic you should be keeping a close eye on hubby if he takes pictures of your kids'
 
One last thing though, as a very protective mum I would always have one eye at ANY man in a park with a camera regardless of whether it was an SLR, P&S or camera phone. I agree that it is very sad that it has come to this but people have got very scared

No Natalie you have become very scared, it's your issue and you need to own it.

Most sex offending is done by members of the family and close relatives, you need to spend less time keeping 'one eye' on men in the park with cameras and keep 'both ' eyes on your children because you are responsible for them

Sweeping generalisations are bad but I think you're reading into thngs too much to think she said 'all men are paedos'.

Personally, and as I think she said but apologies if not, it's instinct not rational thought that provokes the (over-)protective reaction. As much as 'they' would like us to be politically correct clones of each other, with no -ists among us, you can't fight nature and if it were me (even as a man and father) I'd be more wary of a lone male than a female in many circumstances. By their nature, males are the stronger, predatory and therefore more threatening of the species. Females are the more vulnerable, nurturing and therefore less threatening. That's why a bloke taking on the 'opposite' role is seen as 'cute', and women performing terrible acts on children as all the more ghastly. That's not sexism, it's nature and evident throughout the animal kingdom, to which we belong.

That's not me suggesting that all men are aggressive baby eating thugs before anyone reads too much into it :)

This whole business of "paeds" really makes my blood boil. The majority of child abuse is carried out by family members or friends of the family or people close to the family (or child). It is the media and the Government that have stirred up this whole thing out of proportion for their own self interest.

If anyone in a park with a camera is a pervert, I think its about time everyone stopped letting their kids run naked round the swings and roundabouts.....








Seriously, this is all about perception, child attacks and peadophilia is no more common now than it was 20, 30, 40 years ago, but the perceptions are different as is the reporting and coverage of any such events. Oh dear, look, there is a man 300yrds away with a camera who might get a picture of my child all wrapped up in a coat, hat, shoes, etc....SO WHAT?? :bonk: Be aware, but don't be paranoid, because that man, or indeed woman, might be a peadophile, but they are, in nearly all cases, a perfectly normal person that happens to own a camera - please feel free to paste this across every parenting forum you can find :lol:

However, you are all photographers, you know there is a chance you will get approached due to the media induced paranoia of the society we live in. No point getting yourself beat up over it, prepare your reasonable answers beforehand, and if they are someone that in other circumstances would be bullet fodder for Rob, walk away, because life is too damn short. :shake:

I for one am not content to simply sit back and allow such misguided people to demonstrate naivety and ignorance of such magnitude. The worst thing is that Natalie, unfortunately, continued to dig and dig, and still has not accepted that she, and those who share similar ridiculous, paranoid opinions, simply add fuel to the flames.

Fair enough. I'm new here so not sure of the etiquette on this forum. Was personally disappointed to see the thread take the direction of a sustained attack on somebody rather than discussing the subject at hand.

I find it somewhat ironic that a topic discussing how the oversensitivities and paranoia of society were at fault ended up with an oversensitive and sensationalist reaction to an ill thought out comment

Yup, I am over protective! Yes i have a lot to learn, I am a young mum and business woman and yes, probably niave !
But ultimately you are right, I am responsible for my child, so i will choose how i bring him up and how i feel and watch out for whoever and whatever i feel i should. Thanks

I have never had any problems personally, taking photos of my kids in the park but I'm sure it will happen one day as this matter seems to get worse day by day.
I know I wont be calm if this ever happened to me and I know that most of you will slate me for it. I'm afraid I would argue and argue and really wind the accuser up probably causing them to hit me.

There's only one way to find out.... FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHTTTTTTTTT

I saw a clip on the Scottish news about it saying some councils want to ban photography of kids and some that want some sort of consent form that was a minefield (as the article said). The reporter rightly said it would mean an end to kids having cherished memories to look back on. The parents and children will lose out. The whole thing is just a ridiculous overreaction. Mythical paedophiles in trenchcoats taking pictures of kids in playparks isn't what you need to worry about either.
 
As was said, post this onto a parenting website and you'd be into an interesting discussion and I bet the thread would get locked or deleted very quickly, which is a shame as this discussion needs to be had. Too often in this internet/connected world people are too busy to jump on the self righteous bandwagon and grab their internet pitchforks and flaming torches. It's very easy to just type something.

Just look at the recent flurry of text messages allegedly announcing the identity of James Bulgers killer, leading to an innocent man again being targeted wrongly.

To be honest I'm disappointed by a comment that someone would be worried about their husband taking photo's of someone else's children. I normally get flack from my missus for taking too many of other kids and not enough of mine. How far has this fear been allowed to permeate if people don't even trust their partners?

Whether it be alleged terrorism or a risk to children, we need to challenge these stereotyping of photographers at every opportunity, even if that means one mum/parent/policeman/PCSO at a time.

Agree with this, 100%. Absolutely spot on.

This debate has in fact, been very good; totally decent and inoffensive. Personally, having been away from tP for so long I am particularly pleased that it has been allowed to continue.

As Byker28i suggests, it really doesn't matter if it's a policeman, Mum or whoever - when such comments are made, we, as decent law abiding photographers need to redress the balance. Just because Natalie is one Mum doesn't mean we all have to say 'awwwww bless her, leave her alone, don't pick on her you nasty man...!!'.

Good debate, long may it continue.
 
Maybe people should just stop having kids, or at the very least simply keep them indoors all the time. God knows children are annoying enough.

Also, kids do not belong in pubs, and as such shouldn't be in them, so maybe pubs will be the last bastion of photographers.
 
Maybe people should stop being so neurotic about random strangers sitting in parks, openly taking pictures, and look a little closer when uncle Billy wants little Tarquin to sit on his knee at Christmas.


What is just as worrying is what will the kids be like when they're all grown up, having being brought up in an environment where nobody is even allowed to look at them without their motives being questioned....my guess is they'll be even more neurotic/hysterical than their parents. God spare us, please!

You forgot to add that black people make better dancers ( they have natural rhythm you know :cool:) and that all Chinese are brilliant at maths, in your lopsided sociological view of humanity.

I can name quite a few 'species' of whom the female is more predatory and arguably stronger.

I think you will find that the only difference between male and female pedophiles is the 'way' that they abuse, a cursory look at recent child protection failures indicates that women can act in appallingly cruel and 'predatory' ways.

My advice to you Natalie (I am sure that you do care for your son) , is to do some solid research because by keeping an eye on me in the park with my camera you are actually looking in the wrong direction.

All is being said of men & women (not aimed @ just us men) taking photo's of our kid's BUT what would we do about kids taking photo's of us MEN!:thinking:

Would we go upto their parents & say "Excuse me but would you delete your kids pics please, as they have taken some of me":shrug: or am I just blowing this out of all pro-portion:thinking:

I too got called up by the police.

I decided to head over the local Skatepark, and take some pic of some skateboarders.

There was a group of lads. 15-16 I asked if I could take pics of them skateboarding, they were fine with it.
But with it being a free, open air park, everyone and anyone could go, so obv there was some small kids too.

I was there happily snapping away, when a car rolled up, and asked for a word.

I was then put into the back of the car, and asked lots of questions, they went throught my camera, looking to see what pics I had been taking...

Anyways, after checking me out of the sex offenders register etc, they let me go, as I am a clean and free man.

But still, nevertheless, i moved on, and keeping skateboarding to proper big events.

Interesting discussion! .. Just to add a bit more .. :)

I read somewhere that a high percentage of child porn images were actually being taken by kids :gag: a lot of which are taken using mobile phones. Another point is that a lot of the violence towards kids is also carried out by kids.
 
After becoming a Dad again 3 year ago - I'm 46 now (probs look like her Grandad more than her Dad)- Im back into taking photos in the park with my daughter, Usually I'm with my wife but when we aren't together i have noticed "The Looks". I just make sure i only photgoraph my daughter and no one else if possible, if the parks too busy i get no shots, but one thing I do is talk to one or too people there, let them know i'm with my daughter, join in with my daughter and just be myself.
I've not been asked what i'm doing or been approached by anyone yet but I do expect to be at some point, when it happens I'll try and be reasonable if possible, I'll walk away if i have too because of my daughter, but I will be happier if the police are called and it is explained to the other parent(s) that i am a normal guy enjoying time with my child, Thats the only way people will let me back there to photograph my daughter, they need educating and reassuring from authorative people. Hopefully its a Tog copper that comes along!!
