I need a list of offensive words! (potentially NSFW)

I'm writing a word game for PC which contains a dictionary of some 270,000 words.

Now I *could* go through the list manually and remove every word I find offensive, but that'd take ages. I need to remove swear words, offensive words, racist words, even certain slang words would have to be flagged as 'offensive'.

It would be much faster if I could run a comparison between my own dictionary, and a dictionary of offensive words that need to be removed - we're talking the difference between weeks, and minutes. Plus by doing it manually there's always the potential to miss something.

Thing is, I'm having trouble finding a list of offensive words to use.

I'm also unclear as to where to draw the line as to what is acceptable, and what isn't. For instance, "cock" would be valid as it can be used in a non-offensive context. But what about "penis"? Offensive?

I should point out at this stage that my game only accepts words that the user selects. It doesn't suggest words so there will never be the possibility of it saying "you could have **** for 900pts!"

Anyhoo... if anybody knows where I can acquire a fairly extensive list of offensive words/terms, I'd be grateful.

I would say that words which are a correct anatomical name for a body part are not offensive, so you'd be alright with the one you've mentioned above. They normally become offensive when it's slang terms for that same appendage - ie cock(erel) and (door)knob, but those as you also point out how other meanings. There are of course plenty of words out there which are generally classed as obscenities and are only used in those context. The problem comes when you disallow certain words in ANY context. A Well known place on the Lincolnshire coast causes problems with this on speedway forums regularly - the Scun thorpe Scorpians fans get quite upset when they lose half their home town to the dreaded *'s!

Ofcom publish a list of the most offensive words every year, based on an annual survey they do. I know this because I sit next to the compliance unit at work, whose job it is to decide whether a programme needs to go after the watershed or not, so I get to hear them ding the Ofcom list of offensive words to the tune of popular Christmas carols about this time of year.

I'm not sure how extensive it is, though. Might only be the top 20 or something. No prizes for guessing what the most offensive word is year in, year out.
 
Working in the construction industry you get to hear a fair few. Most things are turned a bline eye to in our office (yes, even by us girlies) but the c word is one which guarantees its perpetrator gets booted out of the office and told to come back when they've apologised.

Sad but true, for the most part now many words which 20 years ago would have been horrifying to hear used, are no longer offensive so long as they are not used constantly. Interestingly, our relatively new boss at work uses "f" constantly.......f'ing this, f'ing that, he's a little f'er....and so on and so on. That DOES become offensive. Not sure why it does just because it's used in greater quantity though. also, words which are not generally felt to be offensive when used by a chap, are when used by a woman.
 
I can only think of one, and it's the "C" word. I have put it in this post further down, so if it causes you offence, don't look at it.
