I should know the answer, but

As the title states I should know this, but I do not. I use on my D70s a Nikon to M42 adapter and it has an optical lens to gain infinite focus, does the same apply if you are wishing to use the adapter on a 35mm film body or can you get away with the adapter without the glass?

Yep - sadly, the non-glass adaptors are really only any use for macro-work (much the same as with Canon FD to EF adaptors )
