With a 220 degree angle of view, I understand these circular fisheye lenses were only made to order. In a Nikon book I've had for years, they quote a price of 720,000 Yen back in 1982 - don't know what the exchange rate to the £ was back then.

The average GBP/YEN exchange rate during 1982 was 435 yen to the pound, so the lens was approximately £1655 to buy back then.

Using the retail index that would equate to about £4500 today. So you should have bought a dozen of them when you had the chance :)

Indeed it can. Nikon also produced an 8 mm circular fisheye, which had a 180 degree view similar to the 16 mm lens. The difference however is the 16 is a full-frame fisheye. To be honest, I find a circular image much less appealing than a full-frame view.
