Hi all

off to Iceland for a few days in January ( with Robbi ) , primarily in the hope of seeing the lights but also for general photography . Just talked myself in to hiring the Tokina lens .

Based at the Country Hotel Anna for 4 days & doing self drive , got maps & a guide book but you can't beat personal experience so hoping someone out there maybe able to name a few places that should be on the to see list . Icebergs , seascapes , quaint villages , anything along those lines would be great . Spending lots of time on google maps but they don't tend to go off road & a bit of walking/hiking will be needed I'm sure

Any hints/info much appreciated

You lucky...lucky people. No advice for me.....just hoping you get some cracking weather and some nice aurora borealis.

Enjoy.

Cheers.

Heather just bet me with shothotspot as a suggestion..... a useful site.

Just a few thoughts, which I'm sure are on your list....on the way to your hotel about 50 miles past Selfoss is Seljalandsfoss, a good photogenic waterfall just a couple of minutes off Road 1 and the Hotel Anna is halfway between Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss, another much photographed waterfall...and deservedly so. There is a good walk up above Skogafoss falls starting from some steps to the right of the falls - worth a small exploration....subject to good weather etc. Further on from Skogafoss is Vik with its large expanse of black beaches, sea stacks, church on a hill, etc.

BTW, we stayed in this hotel a couple of years ago (very nice it was too) and just behind the hotel is a pleasant walk above a small gorge, nothing spectacular – just a pleasant amble. The restaurant in the hotel did a very nice...errr, horse meat dish – well, when in Rome.:)

From the hotel to the popular glacier lagoon at Jökulsárlón, it's probably about a 3 hour drive one way, if road conditions are ok it might be worth a punt as it is a fabulous spot, or leave it for your next trip.

As Matt says this site is a must at this time of year http://www.vegagerdin.is/english/web-cams/ As many of the roads off the ring road may be closed.

Happy hols, I'm sure you will have a great time. We go again end of February:banana:

Hi Muchly

I stayed at the hotel Anna for 1 night last September I thought it was a really nice hotel clean friendly staff and good food (although I thought it a bit more expensive than some other hotels I stayed in, good typical Icelandic breakfast spread in the morning) and a good free wi fi service.

Depending on the weather conditions you are within driving distance of Gullfoss and Geisir in the golden circle.
You hotel is in the middle of the 2 falls of Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss about 15km away East and West
You also have the crashed US Navy Dakota plane wreck about 25km east on road 1 check the link
http://www.iangrantphotography.com/photography/iceland/crashed-plane-iceland.html
And about 40km from black sands beach and 50km from Vik.

I’m thinking you’re a bit too far from the ice lagoon and the glaciers of Skaftafell and Skaftafellsjokul

Thingvellir national park is good for aurora as its away from most of the light pollution. Visit it in the daytime to familiarise yourself with the best locations for foreground, e.g there is a lovely wee church there.

Thats fab Marie..... if I get any shots half as good as that I'll be well pleased (y)

Cheers for all your replies & info , websites duly noted & visited....can't wait to get there :)

Navigation shouldn't be an issue but if you have TPE you can use off line maps (just make sure you zoom in a scroll around before you go or use the free wifi)

As I have said elsewhere on this site the best book for Iceland is the ebook by Sarah Marino called Forever Light
It has maps of best guide to photographic spots, GPS locations, road instructions, time of day to shoot etc etc., advice on driving - written by keen photographers for photographers - no tourist type info or useless dribble you won't need - can't recommend it enough.
This is one of mine from Iceland 12 months ago : http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap130807.html
Hope you have a great time

Head along the main route (number 1) and you won't go far wrong. Skogarfoss is great and you can walk to the top of it - we stayed right outside of that one and looks like you are not too far either (about 15 mins drive). You're also near Seljalandsfoss which is worth going to see (about 15 mins the other way).

Hotel Skogar also does great food, as does Hotel Ranga.

Just past Skogarfoss is the plane wreck in Sólheimasandur and then a little further on is the black beaches in Vik. Again, both worth seeing. Beautiful locations. if you fancy a bit

Stop on the way back to the airport at Blue Lagoon and go for a dip. The scenery around it is amazing.
