As we all know dust can be a problem, even with these latest dustshaking thingy sensor's dust & dirt still get there eventually.

So why can't they come up with something that would seal off the sensor completly when a lens is removed as this would limit sensor dust evenmore.

Ie somekind of dust/dirt sheild that would either auto close when the lens is removed or can be set in the options, should you wish to use it.

What about some sort of strip of light sensitive material which is moved along so a fresh area is used for each image?

Steve.

The problem with your theory is that is assumes that dust gets into a camera during a lens change.

Actually, dust also gets into a camera as almost all lenses move air in and out of the lens during zoom or focusing changes, which exits via the rear element (which often moves in and out too) - this airflow will carry dust (which is why all zoom lens will eventually get some dust inside them)

You've probably heard of such lenses being called "dust pumps".

IIRC, one of the DSLR manufacturers has a clear glass element just inside the lens mount to stop dust getting in. Again, IIRC, that glass element is removeable to allow the sensor to be cleaned...

ive never know the "dust pump" 100-400 actually get dust onto the sensor as there is glass that seals the back of the lens from what i can see
more likely it just gets dirt inside the lens itself

most of the crud i get on my sensor comes from a lens change on location
so now i follow a strict set of rules to prevent it
i have three 1D bodies so try to 2nd guess the lens i need for the job in hand and avoid switching at all costs
i clean sensors before every job
if i do have to switch then its power off and wait for the sensor to lose the static etc
then its face away from the wind or get in the car boot
get the new lens ready
take off old lens and install new lens
before worrying about the old lens, caps etc
like i said i avoid switching whenever possible as that is where my lens dust etc comes from

i have also notice the Canon lens that have the seal may well prevent bits getting in though the gap between the lens and the body but the seal will hold onto small bits of crud that can fall inside the body
i always have a quick wipe around the bottom of the lens before taking it off too
that seems to help a great deal

LOL
i don't actually get in the boot but keep the body and lens in the boot and out of the wind while i work!!!

I had real dust problems till I sold my 100-400 now I dont have a problem with it at all.:D

Interesting looking product :|. I wonder how long they last and what they will cost .
